Candice Warner reveals new details of husband's baggy green cap mystery

Candice Warner has hinted at another twist in the unexplained mystery surrounding her husband David’s baggy green storm.

The retiring opening batsman caused quite a stir when he appealed for help on social media to find his baggy green cap on the eve of his last ever Test at the SCG in January.

Warner said a backpack containing his tattered old baggy green worn for the majority of his career and a newer one, had been misplaced somewhere in transit from Melbourne to Sydney ahead of the New Year’s Test.

Candice has previously been tight-lipped when asked about the mystery, but new comments made during filming of Network 10’s I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! show there may still be more to the story.

In footage that has not been aired on the hit reality show, Candice has confirmed rumours the bag turned up right in the middle of the team’s communal hotel room — without explanation.

Candice reveals her biggest mistake

A day out from the match, the cricketer had taken to Instagram to reveal “someone has taken my backpack out of my actual luggage which had my backpack and my girls’ presents in there. “Inside this backpack were my baggy greens. That’s sentimental to me and it’s something I’d love to have back in my hands walking out there come this week,” he said.

The cap was miraculously found a matter of days later, discovered at the team hotel in Sydney with all the contents, including the baggy green, inside.

There has been speculation Warner’s cap went missing as part of a team prank, but Candice can’t imagine a teammate would have let the situation get so out of hand with even Prime Minister Anthony Albanese making a public plea for the cap to be returned immediately.

“When we’re in Sydney we stay at home, but all the bags fly together,” Candice explained when asked about it in the jungle.

“We were coming from Melbourne, so all the bags in freight got dropped to the team hotel.

Everyone grabs their bags. We then grab our bags and the bag that the baggy was in wasn’t there.

“It was not in the team room. So security looked. The bag wasn’t there. The team staff and security at the time said, ‘Mate, consider it gone. We’ve looked, can’t find it, consider it gone’.

“Dave was like, ‘Consider it gone? No way. Not a chance’. And then the bag appeared after the second day of the Test. It appeared in the team room. Right in the middle of the room.

“If someone was to play a prank you wouldn’t let it go beyond a day. You wouldn’t ever let it get that far.

“He’s just happy he got it back. That was his very last Test match.”

The cricketer initially stated the backpack had been removed from his luggage, but Cricket Australia at the time confirmed this wasn’t the case.

According to Cricket Australia, the bag was simply misplaced — and not discovered in an extensive search of the team hotel.

The Age reported at the time the bag containing Warner’s backpack and caps was in a different part of the room to his other bags, and was placed with its “David Warner” label tucked underneath, meaning it went unseen during a frantic search.

Pat Cummins said after Australia wrapped up a 3-0 series sweep against Pakistan: “It’s probably not my story to tell. Maybe talk to Davey.”

Warner then strolled into the post-match press conference, with the baggy green safely atop his head, and suggested questions should be asked of the team’s security.

“You’re going to have to ask security. I wish I’d played a prank like that,” he said.

Warner was seen wearing the cap on his final day as a Test cricketer two days after it had been discovered.

Despite calling time on his 112-Test career, the 37-year-old is still hoping to have a second fairytale farewell at the T20 World Cup held in the West Indies and the United States, beginning from June 1.
