CAMERON White never gave up hope of an Australian return but it still came as a shock when he was told his national career had been revived.

CAMERON White never gave up hope of an Australian return but was shocked when he got a call from national selection panel chairman Trevor Hohns on Thursday morning.

The 34-year-old, who last played for Australia in 2015, has been called up to the one-day side for Sunday’s series opener against England at the MCG as a replacement for injured batsman Chris Lynn.

White, who had a war or words with Hohns last summer over the youth-orientated selection for Australian limited overs teams, said he “probably” thought his shot at the national team was done.

But after consistent success in the domestic limited overs competition, plus a pile of Big Bash runs for the Melbourne Renegades, White has another shot at the big time.

“I was very surprised this morning when Trevor Hohns rang me. I’m really looking forward to the opportunity,” White said on Thursday.

“I probably did (think his national career was over) but in the back of my mind I never really gave up all hope. It’s something I have always wanted to do, get back and have another go at it.

“I’m just grateful for the chance and now it’s up to me whether I make the most of it.”

White got the nod ahead of a bagful of younger rivals including Victorian teammate Glenn Maxwell, who had support from several corners, including former captain Ricky Ponting.

Maxwell sent White a message of congratulations, and the veteran had no idea while his fellow Bushranger continued to fall foul of the national selectors.

Hohns had declared this squad was chosen with a view to preparing for next year’s World Cup in the UK, but White said that wasn’t even on his radar.

“We’ll just see what happens in these five games,” White said.

“It’s a long way away, I don’t know what their plans are. All I know is I can concentrate on these fiev game … hope I get an opportunity and if I do, bat as well as I can and stay in the team for as long as I can. That’s where my mind is at.”

White, has compiled 1534 runs in the past five domestic one-day competitions, is also second on the Big Bash run tally with 285, second only to Hobart’s D’Arcy Short (406) who was also in the running for the one-day spot.

But Hohns said White’s consistency got him the nod.

“He’s in very good form as his figures demonstrate, he’s playing very well,” Hohns said.

“He’s one of the leading run-scorers in the BBL, he’s experienced, he’s a very smart cricketer and he’s a good fielder.

“He ticks all the boxes for what we need at this stage.”
