GLENN Maxwell’s training standards may have been questioned, but no one was questioning his brilliance on the cricket field after his spectacular catch for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League at Etihad Stadium.
On the same day Maxwell met Steve Smith for coffee to address the Australian skipper’s public criticism of him after he left out of the one-day squad, the Big Show reminded Australian selectors it’s not just his batting the national team will be missing against England.
The crowd erupted when Maxwell pulled off a stunning catch to dismiss Renegades opener Tim Ludeman in the Melbourne derby.
Maxwell was at full stretch to stop Ludeman’s powerful cut shot with his right hand before safely completing the catch.
Two BBL half-centuries hasn’t been enough to earn Maxwell a call-up to the one-day team to take on England.
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who has called for Maxwell’s inclusion in the national team, said there was more to the Melbourne Stars ace than his betting.
Maxwell finished with four catches as the Stars claimed their first win.
“If he is not one of the best fielders in the world, I’m not here. A super catch,” Ponting said on Channel 10.
“That is a screamer.”
Fellow Channel 10 commentator Mark Howard described Maxwell as a “freak”.
Fans were scratching their heads why the Australian team continues to leave Maxwell on the outer.
Speaking after the match, Maxwell said it was a good feeling to finally get a win on the board.
“It’s been a long time coming,” he said.
“It feels like we have been doing a lot of right things and we can’t get over the line on the field. Today everything came together. We had our star players stand up with KP playing a brilliant innings and our bowlers doing well at the front.”
Maybe we could get Glenn Maxwell to train Steve Smith how to catch âsmarterâ after all those sitters he dropped during the Ashes tests? ð¤ #BBL07

Glenn Maxwell is just about the only human on earth who could do that. But hey, we donât need that kind of fielding in the Australian team ð¤ #CatchesWinMatches
