SuperCoach: Top point-of-difference trade-in options ahead of Round 7

He has failed to fire so far in BBL09, but Stars opener Nic Maddinson should be on SuperCoach radars ahead of their Round 7 double. Plus, the Aussie Test star in less than 1,000 teams.

While several popular picks have fired in Round 6, it pays to go against the crowd in SuperCoach BBL.

A monster score from a point-of-difference pick – one with under 10 per cent ownership – has an even greater weight than a big total from the likes of D’Arcy Short or Josh Philippe.

The Stars have their second double in three weeks coming up in Round 7 and while they boast the most popular SuperCoach buy in the competition – T20 star Glenn Maxwell – they have several tantalising PODs for us to feast on.

ROUND 7 PODS

Nathan Coulter-Nile ($158.5k, BAT/BWL)

Average: 44.3 (4 games)

Ownership: 6.9 per cent

Missed out on a spot in the Australian squad to India but at his best, Coulter-Nile is a damaging short form player. His ability to score with both bat and ball makes him a valuable commodity in a double game round, and he is $16.8k cheaper than his starting price. The big-hitting all-rounder has produced modest returns in BBL09 but is yet to go big and with Dale Steyn and Peter Handscomb out of the Stars line-up, he should shoulder more responsibility.

Nathan Coulter-Nile is yet to explode in BBL09.

Sandeep Lamichhane ($147.7k, BWL)

Average: 50.2 (5 games)

Ownership: 5.4 per cent

One of the craftiest T20 spinners comes at a major discount ahead of Round 7. Lamichhane has shaved $28.9k on his starting price but his last game was encouraging for SuperCoaches, claiming 3/26 from four overs on his way to a 102-point total against the Renegades. He faces his cross-town rivals again in Round 7 and looms as a point-of-difference option with plenty of upside.

Nic Maddinson ($82.4k, BAT)

Average: 18.8 (6 games)

Ownership: 7 per cent

Maddinson has scored just 68 runs and averaged 18.8 points in six innings so far in BBL09, so why would you jump on? Because he is dirt cheap and has a double coming up. The Stars opener has scored more than 1500 runs across his BBL career, and a double game round means there is greater chance of him scoring well. Will be an absolute steal if he delivers.

Nathan Lyon ($145.5k, BWL)

Average: N/A

Ownership: 1 per cent

Nathan Lyon finished his Test summer with a bag of 10 wickets and is set to play his first game of BBL09 in Round 7. The star spinner has a strong Big Bash record, taking 36 wickets in his 27 matches at a tidy economy rate of 6.89. His Round 9 bye may scare off some but Lyon has a double game week the following round and comes at an affordable price. A thumb injury sustained in the Test could delay his return, so be sure to check the Sixers’ squad before making the call.

Scott Boland ($87.3K, BWL)*

Average: 84 (1 game)

Ownership: 3 per cent

An injury to Hurricanes all-rounder James Faulkner opened the door for the BBL veteran and he didn’t disappoint, posting 84 SuperCoach points after finishing with two wickets and a run out. Boland price is set to rise after this promising display but there is still money to be made from the paceman. Faulkner has been ruled out for the next 2-4 weeks with a calf injury so expect Boland to continue getting opportunities.

*Price subject to change after Round 6
