SuperCoach BBL Cheapie Bible: Best bargain buys for 2024/25 season

Welcome to the year of the veteran. While the Cheapie Bible often highlights young talent, BBL14 shifts to these seasoned stars offering incredible value for your fantasy cricket XI.

SuperCoach BBL: Tim Michell's FIRST Team Picker!

Welcome to the year of the veteran. The Cheapie Bible is usually stacked with top youngsters – and there are plenty on this list including a few the average cricket fan has likely never heard of.

But the biggest value in SuperCoach this year lies in proven players who start underpriced due to factors including injuries, national call-ups and the general up-and-down nature of T20 cricket.

SuperCoach prices are largely based on performances from the most recent season – not career statistics – and this is where SuperCoaches can cash in.

Marcus Stoinis, BAT/BWL, $84,200, Stars

A noted star of the BBL (eighth most runs ever) but starts very cheap. Coming off a poor campaign by his standards, scoring only 169 runs in 10 innings and averaging 141 with the ball. While his best is likely behind him, it’s a tempting price for guy with two doubles in the opening three rounds, particularly if bowling.

Adam Zampa, BWL, $80,100, Renegades

A proven performer at this level – and above it – but is priced on an uncharacteristically poor season where he took only six wickets at 41.66. It was his lowest wicket tally since 2017. With the sixth most wickets in BBL history, Zampa won’t be down for long – and he has doubles in rounds 1 and 4.

Kane Richardson, BWL, $97,900, Renegades

Yes, we are stretching the definition of a cheapie here but he’s definitely cheap for a player of such pedigree. The Renegade is a great of BBL, taking the third most wickets ever. He’s played plenty of ODIs and T20Is for Australia but hasn’t pulled on Australian colours for almost a year, meaning he’s likely available for most/all of the Big Bash. He averaged 80+ SuperCoach points in 22/23 and has the double in the opening round. Very hard to pass up.

Matt Renshaw, BAT, $68,800, Heat

The former Test opener starts cheap after a rough campaign in which he averaged just 19 with the bat and didn’t bowl. Renshaw has averaged as high as 48 in SuperCoach in the past but is priced on an average of just 23, so there is plenty of room for improvement. A lot depends on whether he bowls and where he bats (higher the better obviously) so keep an eye on early team news. Double in round 3 is handy. Nathan McSweeney being called into the Test squad has only increased Renshaw’s SuperCoach appeal as a bench starting option.

Henry Thornton, BWL, $98,100, Strikers

The Strikers speedster boasts the best strike rate of any bowler in BBL history with more than 20 wickets. Thornton takes a wicket every 13.3 deliveries he bowls and looks set to stamp himself as one of the key quicks in Adelaide. The Strikers play twice in round 2, so expect him to be a popular starting pick at a discount of more than $60k on his BBL13 price.

Mark Steketee, BWL, $79,100, Stars

What has happened to the bowler who was a force in BBL10, taking 24 wickets in 16 games? Since then, Steketee has played 19 matches in the past three tournaments which have yielded 23 scalps. He found himself on the outer for much of his first campaign as a Star, only featuring three times in BBL13 due to combination of form and injury. The Stars are loaded with all-round talent but if Steketee gets an early look in, SuperCoaches will need to consider him. It was only two summers ago he produced a round score of 173 points.

Tim David, BAT, $72,400, Hurricanes

Australia’s T20 gun is a valuable commodity across the world in that there are few better at finishing an innings. David is a master at hitting sixes from ball one, which is a very rare asset. But his matchwinning skills don’t quite translate to SuperCoach given he doesn’t get as much time at the crease as top order players. Hobart’s early schedule is hardly enticing, and he also only bowled 10 overs in last year’s Big Bash so don’t expect huge points there. Even so, he starts very cheap compared to previous Big Bash output – $76,000 cheaper than his starting price last season.

Matt Spoors, BAT/BWL, $58,500, Scorchers

The West Australian has become relevant in the past few weeks after injuries to Ashton Agar, Cooper Connolly and Ashton Turner. There’s a serious chance Spoors, a Canadian international who plays grade cricket in Perth, is picked for round 1.

Jordan Buckingham, BWL, $39,500, Strikers

The Redbacks quick is yet to play a BBL game and has only featured in four 50-over matches for South Australia. But Buckingham has been hailed a future Test seamer after taking 74 wickets in his first 21 Sheffield Shield games. The 24-year-old has an opportunity to fill the void left by Englishman David Payne in the Strikers’ pace battery. Monitor his fitness leading into the BBL though as he suffered a side strain playing for Australia A.

Harry Dixon, BAT, $39,500, Renegades

Compared to David Warner, Dixon is an aggressive up and coming opening batsmen who has made a big impact in pathways for Victoria and Australia. Australia’s leading run scorer in U19 World Cup with 409 runs at 44.14.

Sam Konstas, BAT, $39,500, Thunder

Third-youngest Australian to post hundreds in both innings of a Sheffield Shield game behind Ricky Ponting and Archie Jackson. Konstas is seen as a generational talent and one of the best young players coming through the ranks. In fact, he’s so good he may barely play Big Bash given he’s a genuine contender for a Test spot this season, despite losing out to Nathan McSweeney for the opening Tests.

Mahli Beardman, BWL, $39,500, Scorchers

“I think I can hit the 150 mark”. Beardman’s reputation for raw pace shone in the recent U19 Australian World Cup campaign, where he won player of the final with 3/15 off seven overs. However, he has plenty of competition for spots at the Scorchers in Jhye Richardson, Lance Morris, Jason Behrendorff and Matt Kelly.
