You’ve come to the right place.
To help you pick a competitive starting side, seven expert KFC SuperCoach teams have been collated and combined into the ultimate consensus team for BBL12
Coaches: Isa Guha, Tim Michell, The Phantom, Dan Batten, Al Paton, Azza (Jock Reynolds), Damo (Jock Reynolds)
WICKETKEEPERS
Joe Clarke (Melbourne Stars) $153,800 WKP-BAT
Bench:
Josh Inglis (Perth Scorchers) $87,000 WKP-BAT
No Josh Philippe may surprise considering he is the most popular keeper in KFC SuperCoach, but going Clarke first up could see you push ahead of the pack. Clarke, who plays twice in the opening round, scored 10 runs less than Philippe in last year’s BBL — and at a better strike rate. Inglis is a no-brainer to stash away for the Scorchers’ round 2 double.
BATTERS
Matt Short (Sydney Thunder) $197,500 BAT-BWL
Daniel Sams (Sydney Thunder) $179,300 BAT-BWL VC
Alex Hales (Sydney Thunder) $130,300 BAT
Rilee Rossouw (Sydney Thunder) $105,000 BAT
Marcus Stoinis (Melbourne Stars) $83,400 BAT-BWL
Bench:
Beau Webster (Melbourne Stars) $62,000 BAT
Josh Brown (Brisbane Heat) $42,000 BAT
There were injury concerns last week surrounding Sams but he has been picked in their squad, which means he comes into the equation as a vice-captaincy loophole option. The Strikers expect Short to roll the arm over which justifies his high price-tag, while Hales and Rossouw are capable of going big — and at a rapid rate. Stoinis picks himself at that price while cheapies Beau Webster and Josh Brown — who could get a call-up at some point — round out the bench.
BOWLERS
Rashid Khan (Adelaide Strikers) $193,600 BWL (C)
Trent Boult (Melbourne Stars) $180,000 BWL
Peter Siddle (Adelaide Strikers) $151,300 BWL
Shadab Khan (Hobart Hurricanes) $125,000 BWL-BAT
Adam Zampa (Melbourne Stars) $103,600 BWL
Bench:
Fazalhaq Farooqi (Sydney Thunder) $105,000 BWL
Aaron Hardie (Perth Scorchers) $99,600 BAT-BWL
All of these bowlers have a double besides Shadab Khan, who had batters in a spin in Aussie conditions at this year’s T20 World Cup for Pakistan. His namesake, Rashid Khan, is one guy you don’t want to be without with the Strikers’ first round double, and leading BBL11 wicket-taker Peter Siddle can also put up some big totals. Zampa is the fifth-most popular player in KFC SuperCoach BBL, while Farooqi is a late bolter. He played in the IPL and at the World Cup for Afghanistan this year and Thunder captain Chris Green has said he will bowl at the death.
Cheapie rankings: Top 5 SuperCoach BBL bargains
With the first ball of the BBL summer upon us, it’s decision time in KFC SuperCoach.
From Round 1 locks to the best mid-season targets, our experts have combined their cheapie rankings – players available for less than $100k – to deliver the consensus top five.
Go through the individual rankings below and for more potential bargains, see the full cheapie bible here.
Tim Michell
1. Marcus Stoinis (Stars) $83,400
2. Josh Inglis (Scorchers) $87,000
3. Cam Green (Scorchers) $62,500
4. Joel Paris (Hurricanes) $96,100
5. Tim David (Hurricanes) $89,700
Stoinis is an easy choice for maximum votes and should be in every KFC SuperCoach BBL team. Only a few years ago, Stoinis was about three times the starting price he has been set for BBL12 – and no Glenn Maxwell surely means he has to bowl. Inglis has a Round 2 double and shapes as a great moneymaker as a starting gloveman. Don’t forget he would have been in Australia’s T20 World Cup squad if not for a freak golfing injury. Green will be a must-have when he returns from Test duties in mid-January and a perfect mid-season downgrade. I’m really bullish on Paris who has been bowling superbly for Western Australia and performed well for the Prime Minister’s XI. David likely bats 1-2 spots too low to be a consistent KFC SuperCoach scorer but he has an enormous points ceiling.
CHEAT SHEET: HOW TO PICK A SUPERCOACH BBL TEAM IN 5 MINUTES
Dan Batten
1. Marcus Stoinis (Stars) $83,400
2. Josh Inglis (Scorchers) $87,000
3. Tim David (Hurricanes) $89,700
4. Aaron Hardie (Scorchers) $99,600
5. Cam Green (Scorchers) $62,500
Stoinis, then daylight. If he resumes his usual spot at the top of the order and bowls his four overs, the value is off the charts, and he is an absolute must for their round 1 double. We saw him bowl during the T20 World Cup and with Glenn Maxwell sidelined, they will need to fill some extra overs which works into his hands. Inglis hasn’t had much opportunity to impress as the Aussie reserve keeper, but a player of his quality who bats high in the order for less than $90k is a steal. Uncertainty surrounds the role of Tim David but there is no doubt that he can hit a big ball. He finished with the best-ever strike rate for any IPL batter to face more than 50 balls in the competition (216) and recently went at over 200 in the Abu Dhabi T10 league. With Mitch Marsh ruled out of the tournament, Hardie and Green loom as the likely beneficiaries for the Scorchers – Green in the latter stages once his Test commitments are over. I’ll be stashing Hardie on my bench for his round 2 double and bringing Green straight into my side once he is named on the team sheet.
The Phantom
1. Marcus Stoinis (Stars) $83,400
2. Josh Inglis (Scorchers) $87,000
3. Beau Webster (Stars) $62,500
4. Cam Green (Scorchers) $62,500
5. Tim David (Hurricanes) $89,700
As mentioned many times this KFC SuperCoach pre-season, Marcus Stoinis picks himself at No. 1. Scorchers gloveman and top-order hitter Josh Inglis isn’t far behind, despite his side’s Round 1 bye. Stash him on your bench in preparation. Cam Green isn’t one for the opening round, either, but Aussie Test allrounder returning to the BBL in January at $62k will be a gift. Beau Webster is the smoky, though. If he bats a little higher up the order than expected, he should make some nice early cash.
Al Paton
1. Marcus Stoinis (Stars) $83,400
2. Tim David (Hurricanes) $89,700
3. Will Sutherland (Renegades) $62,500
4. Josh Inglis (Scorchers) $87,000
5. Josh Brown (Heat) $42,000
Stoinis’s scoring power is up with the best in KFC SuperCoach BBL especially if he’s bowling again, which makes $83k a ridiculous price. Tim David didn’t do a lot in the T20 World Cup but he scored 50 off 20 balls - including six sixes - for the Delhi Bulls the other day in the Abu Dhabi T10 League. I have to pick a $42k player and Brown seems the best bet - hopefully he can crack into the Heat’s strong batting line-up
Damo (@DamoSC)
1. Josh Inglis (Scorchers) $87,000
2. Marcus Stoinis $83,400
3. James Vince $99,900
4. Tim David $89,700
5. Cam Green (Scorchers) $62,500
If Inglis was playing round 1, he’d be a set-and-forget keeper, and he still may be from the Scorchers DGW in Round 2 considering the loss of Salt, Marsh and Evans at the top of the order. Marcus Stoinis is back bowling again, and should bat at the top of the Stars order, but he’s been more comfortable batting at 5 or 6 for Australia. If I was confident he’d definitely open or bat top 4, Stoinis would’ve dethroned Inglis. James Vince has a bit of a down year last BBL season only scoring over 40 points twice in 7 games, but he averaged 49.2 SuperCoach points in BBL10 which I think is closer to what he’ll truly produce – over 20 points more on average than last season. Cam Green will be a great last dash rookie late in the season once he is released from national duties to join the Perth Scorcher. His availability is the only thing keeping him this far down my list.
Azza (@azzajewell)
1. Marcus Stoinis (Stars) $83,400
2. Lance Morris (Scorchers) $62,500
3. Matthew Kuhnemann (Heat) $71,600
4. Josh Inglis (Scorchers) $87,000
5. Nick Larkin (Stars) $62,500
We’ve said it enough this pre-season, but I’ll say it one last time – Stoinis is an absolute bargain and a must have. It wasn’t long ago that Stoinis scored over 190 three times in a season and even created headlines with a 244 against Sixers in BBL09. More than 70 per cent of the competition have jumped on board, and so should you. I’m also really keen on Lance Morris, the ‘Wild Thing’. I think this the season he announces himself on a bigger stage and truly gets noticed, along with Matthew Kuhnemann who will be keen to fill Michael Neser’s shoes while he’s in the test squad/team.
