Five batters every team should consider in SuperCoach BBL

Get ready for fireworks. Here are five stars with the bat ready to supercharge your BBL fantasy team.

BBL SuperCoach - Most Expensive Players, Keep or Avoid | Cricket Today Podcast

There has never been a better time to take a risk on batters in SuperCoach BBL than in BBL14.

The introduction of a Flex position – and best 11 scoring – has given coaches greater freedom to take a risk on batters with huge points ceilings.

Previously, one poor score from a batter could derail your entire SuperCoach round.

Now, your worst score will drop out of your total score, mitigating some of the risk of picking players who rely on runs and clearing the boundaries to score SuperCoach points.

Players with big strike rates such as Tim David (153.6 career BBL strike rate), Glenn Maxwell (152.5), Chris Lynn (149) and Ashton Turner (144) can help supercharge your score through the SuperCoach strike rate bonus.

BBL13 finals hero Josh Brown is another prolific hitter known for clearing the ropes.

These are the batters (BAT only) to consider for your starting team in BBL14.

1. JOSH BROWN (RENEGADES) $112,200 BAT

How can Josh Brown, who scored 140 off 57 balls in last season’s semi-final, be $112k, you ask? As SuperCoach isn’t played during finals, that stunning performance – and his half-century in the final – have no bearing on Brown’s starting price for BBL14. It has been a whirlwind 12 months for the 30-year-old, moving to Victoria on a domestic deal, signing with the Renegades and jetsetting around the world to play T10 and T20 cricket. He smashed 60 off 18 balls in his last innings for the Caribbean Tigers, which gives you some idea of his incredible power. It helps that the Renegades have a round 1 double, too.

2. JAKE FRASER-MCGURK (RENEGADES) $128,600 BAT

Only the competition’s leading run scorer Matt Short (25) and Brown (23) hit more sixes than Fraser-McGurk (18) in the BBL last season. The young gun affectionately known as ‘Rooster’ announced himself in spectacular style, blasting 257 runs at a strike rate of 158.6 and making two half-centuries in eight innings. He passed 20 runs (the mark needed for the strike rate bonus) in five of his eight knocks, too. The 22-year-old went to another level playing for Delhi Capitals in the IPL, scoring 330 runs at an insane strike rate of 234. Taking him on in the round 1 Renegades SuperCoach double would make for very nervous viewing.

3. FINN ALLEN (SCORCHERS) $152,000 BAT

Hard to believe the Kiwi slugger is only 25 considering how many franchises he has racked up in his globetrotting T20 career. The Scorchers will join Birmingham Phoenix, Royal Challengers Bangalore and San Francisco Unicorns on Allen’s growing resume. He is renowned as one of the hardest hitters in world cricket and boasts a T20 career strike rate of 168 from 126 T20 games. He’s too expensive to start with, but have Allen in your trade plans for the Scorchers’ round 2 double.

4. DAVID WARNER (THUNDER) $152,000 BAT

The prospect of Warner playing a full Big Bash League campaign is so exciting. The Aussie batting legend scored 37 from 39 balls and 13 from 10 balls in his two Thunder appearances last season. But much more will be expected from the 37-year-old in BBL14 as he replaces Alex Hales at the top of the order. As tempting as it will be to start with Warner, SuperCoach BBL is all about playing the fixture. Sydney Thunder doesn’t have a double until round 6, so you should wait until the New Year before bringing Warner into your team. Hopefully, he might even come at a lower price by then.

5. OLLIE DAVIES (THUNDER) $78,100

One of Australia’s most exciting batting talents and it seems only a matter of time until Davies dons the green and gold. The 24-year-old reached 20 in five of his last six innings during BBL13 after finding a niche as the Thunder’s No.4 batter. Davies showed his class when he scored back-to-back Sheffield Shield tons in March, but it’s his ability to clear the rope which makes him a genuine SuperCoach BBL cheapie option. Davies has hit 33 sixes in his 39 career BBL games. Davies only needs a couple of early scores to kickstart his cash generation.
