International cricket is about to shake up the Big Bash League, with several of the competition’s biggest names set to be unavailable during the middle and latter stages of the tournament.
Nepalese spinner Sandeep Lamichanne was the first international to depart Australia after he was a revelation in the opening four rounds of BBL08 with eight wickets for Melbourne Stars.
He will be replaced by English paceman Liam Plunkett but could return for the latter rounds of the BBL, depending on how his Bangladesh Premier League team Sylhet Sixers fares.
TRADE HELP: WHO TO GET IN ROUND 5
SCHEDULE ANALYSIS: HOW TO JUGGLE BBL BYES
SuperCoach players were dealt some bad news and good news with today’s announcement of the Australian one-day squad. Two of the five most popular selections, Glenn Maxwell and Alex Carey, will be called up for international duty against India on January 12, only two days after the last game of Brisbane Heat’s Round 6 double and either side of Adelaide Strikers’ Round 7 double.
This will present a tricky proposition for coaches who had been considering Carey to capitalise on his double.
But big hitters Chris Lynn and D’Arcy Short were surprisingly overlooked, so lock in Lynn for his double in Round 6 — when he might want to prove a point to selectors.
Other players who will need to be replaced are Marcus Stoinis (Stars), Jhye Richardson (Scorchers), Billy Stanlake (Strikers), Jason Behrendorff (Scorchers), Peter Siddle (Strikers) and Adam Zampa (Stars).
If you have multiple players in your squad it will pay to start making trades early so you have all bases covered, and can still trade strategically heading into Round 7 rather than just scrambling to fill gaps on the field.
And the pain doesn’t end there.
England’s tour of the West Indies will rule Sydney Thunder pair Jos Buttler and Joe Root out of the BBL from Round 7, while Joe Denly will depart Sydney Sixers at the same time to head to the Caribbean.
Tom Curran (Sixers) and David Willey (Perth Scorchers) have been chosen in England’s one-day squad, but their schedule is unlikely to clash with the BBL fixture unless their respective sides reach the final.
English all-rounder Chris Jordan, who previously featured for Adelaide Strikers, and New Zealander Anton Devcich, will join the Thunder as replacements for Root and Buttler.
Devcich looms as a perfect downgrade option when he arrives in Australia, underpriced at $73,000 and boasting a T20 batting average of 25.
The left-arm orthodox bowler has also taken 67 wickets from 125 Twenty20 games.
Pakistani speedster Usman Khan Shinwari will be replaced by Engishman Harry Gurney at Melbourne Renegades in Round 7.
A left-arm quick like Shinwari, Gurney is only $62,500 and looms as a must-have once he makes his BBL debut.
Gurney, who has played 10 one-day internationals for England, boasts an impressive 134 wickets from 114 T20 games.
Adelaide Strikers (Colin Ingram and Rashid Khan), Brisbane Heat (Brendon McCullum and Mujeeb Ur Rahman) and Hobart Hurricanes (Jofra Archer) have internationals available for the entire BBL.
The Hurricanes currently have a vacancy in their roster after injury ruled Tymal Mills out of the remainder of the tournament.
