SuperCoach BBL Round 4 trade guide: How will you fund a trade for Kane Richardson?

Any thoughts of getting Kane Richardson at a significant discount for Melbourne Renegades’ Round 5 SuperCoach BBL double have been dashed. How will you fund a trade for the paceman? FULL TRADE GUIDE

Kane Richardson has been the BBL’s best fast bowler since the start of BBL08.

Saying goodbye can be tough.

But there’s no room for sentiment in SuperCoach BBL.

Top-scoring Sydney Sixers Tom Curran, Ben Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott and Josh Philippe are on the chopping block for Round 4 due to the Sixers’ bye.

The value this quartet will have accumulated in their opening five games should enable you to bolster your side for a crucial stretch.

Adelaide Strikers play twice again in Round 4, taking on Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Thunder.

If you targeted key Strikers such as Alex Carey and Rashid Khan in recent rounds, you will be well-placed for Round 4.

However, you don’t want to overload your team with Strikers as you risk being left short for Round 5, when the Renegades and Stars play twice.

It’s important to try and stay a step of your rivals in SuperCoach BBL and you should have Round 5 in mind when trading for Round 4.

Jumping on reliable scorers such as Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh will leave you in an enviable position when the Melbourne sides share a post-Christmas double.

TOP TARGETS

Aaron Finch (Melbourne Renegades) BAT

The Renegades and Australian skipper is a rarity in SuperCoach BBL. Finch rarely dips below 50 points, scoring 50 and 56 in the opening two rounds from scores of 28 and 29. The combination of strike rate bonus and weight of runs makes Finch one of the riskiest players not to own when he has a double game week. There’s no issue with fielding him against Adelaide in Round 4 before his double against the Sixers and Stars.

Shaun Marsh (Melbourne Renegades) BAT

Still one of the best white-ball batsmen in Australia, Marsh has slotted seamlessly into the Renegades side at No.3. His form in the Marsh Cup and Sheffield Shield this summer has translated to the BBL and almost demands selection — either this round or next. Marsh scored 42 and 55 runs in his first two games for the Renegades to underline his class at this level.

Peter Handscomb (Melbourne Stars) WKP-BAT

With Alex Carey on a bye in Round 5, coaches will need to weigh up whether to trade in Handscomb, Sam Harper or Ben Dunk as cover. Handscomb has a friendly price, although the Stars’ floating batting line-up is a slight concern. In game one the Australian one-day batsman made 20 off 15 balls at No. 4 but he was pushed back to No. 5 and came in with less than six overs left in game two.

Sam Harper (Melbourne Renegades) WKP-BAT

Harper has a slight edge over Handscomb thanks to his opening role. The powerful right-hander has been getting the Renegades off to a flying start and only needs to convert once in a double game week to be a worthwhile trade with a phenomenal strike rate above 170 after two games.

Marcus Stoinis (Melbourne Stars)

The Stars all-rounder hasn’t been bowling due to a niggling injury but reminded SuperCoaches of the impact he can have with the bat when he scored 81 not out from 54 balls in Moe. In a perfect world he would bowl during his double, but Stoinis has the goods to reward teams playing solely as a batsman too.

Skipper Glenn Maxwell has had a huge impact in the early rounds for Melbourne Stars.

Glenn Maxwell (Melbourne Stars)

Maxwell delivered with the bat in the Stars’ opening game of BBL09 (146 points) and then backed up his matchwinning performance with the ball against Hobart (78 points). The Stars skipper could be the No. 1 target for Round 5 if Marcus Stoinis hasn’t started bowling again.

Nic Maddinson (Melbourne Stars)

Maddinson is back opening for the Stars and has played like a man on a mission in the early rounds of BBL09. He missed out in game one against Brisbane Heat but responded with 40 (39) during an attacking display against Hobart in Moe. Openers have enjoyed success this tournament in SuperCoach BBL and Maddinson has the quality to follow that trend.

Harry Gurney (Melbourne Renegades)

The Renegades play on the bowler-friendly Marvel Stadium deck for the first time this tournament in the opening game of Round 4 and also host Sydney Sixers in Round 5 in a rematch of last season’s semi-final. Gurney conceded less than 25 runs from four overs in three of the four matches he played at Docklands in BBL08 and is worth picking for his economy rate under the roof alone.

Kane Richardson has been the BBL’s best fast bowler since the start of BBL08.

Dale Steyn (Melbourne Stars)

Steyn’s replacement Haris Rauf has made a strong case to become a permanent member of the Melbourne Stars’ team, however Steyn’s position for his remaining games in Australia is not in question. The South African great signed for the first six games of the BBL, which makes him eligible to feature in both Stars matches in Round 5 before being replaced by Englishman Pat Brown.

Kane Richardson (Melbourne Renegades)

The premier BBL quick since the start last summer will come at a cost. Richardson opened BBL09 with scores of 42 and 145 and rarely puts in a bad performance for the Renegades. Those hoping he’d be significantly cheaper than his starting price by Round 5 are set to be disappointed. Start thinking about how you’ll fund this trade.
