SuperCoach BBL: Jackson Coleman is another ace in the pace pack for the Stars, but will he play?

Another round, another bravura performance by the top-of-the-table Melbourne Stars, who unleashed another quick bowler who immediately posted a 100 point SuperCoach BBL performance – but with their depth in bowling, will he get a game in Round 10?

Their destruction of the Scorchers on the latter’s home deck was proof positive that teams on the double don’t mean much for SuperCoach if they get bowled out for 86 inside 14 overs. In their second game in Round 9, not a single Perth player reached 75 points, let alone 100, meaning that only WKP / BAT option Josh Inglis came close to posting 200 points for his two games, tallying 185 across the course of the opener and closer for Round 9.

When it comes to Round 10, he would seem to literally be a keeper for the just on 20% of teams who have him – of players available in that DPP selection, only the absent Alex Carey from the Adelaide Strikers is averaging more than Inglis’ 57.2 ppg. Brisbane Heat cheapie James Peirson remains the most-owned player in that role, with a strong 55 point game (mostly through catches off an incredible James Pattinson performance) boosting his average to 29.5 ppg and his price to an even $70,000.

With just a few rounds left and the Renegades the final team to have a bye this season, now is the time to really knuckle down and get your team in order.

BOOM OF THE ROUND: JAMES PATTINSON | BRISBANE HEAT | BWL | 144 points

It’s possible that only the debut of Haris Rauf will stop James Pattinson’s performance with the Brisbane Heat against the Strikers from being the spell of the season. He was simply magnificent, capturing 5/33 from his full quota of four overs as he helped destroy the Strikers, bowling them out for 110. Unbelievably, just 3.4% of all SuperCoach BBL players benefited from his 144 point total; it was his second appearance, and a marked increase from his 22 points in the previous round. Having increased his price by just $13,000 or so to $139,900, we’re willing to bet he’ll be in more SuperCoach sides in Round 10 and beyond.

BUST OF THE ROUND: USMAN KHAWAJA | SYDNEY THUNDER | BAT | 0 points

It was a toss-up between Chris Lynn from the Brisbane Heat and the Thunder’s Khawaja, but the latter earns this dubious ‘honour’ this round after yet another failure. Still owned by over 20% of all players in the SuperCoach BBL game – who are, no doubt, hoping that he’s ‘one good game away’ from capturing some semblance of form – it has thus far been a season to forget for the former Australian representative. His season started reasonably okay, with 144 points when on the double in Round 1, but since then it’s been decidedly ordinary, with just one more instance of passing 50 points in a round. He’s had a very disappointing summer.

UNIQUE OF THE ROUND: JACKSON COLEMAN | MELBOURNE STARS | BWL | 102 points | 0.6% ownership

A debut in BBL|09 after Stars’ coach David Hussey made the (correct) call to bring him in for the fast, bouncy conditions at Optus Stadium saw Coleman reward the faith of his coach, capturing 3/16 from three overs. The big query is now whether or not he will play in the return game at the G on Sunday – the Stars have made murmurings that their Pakistani pace ace Haris Rauf will be rested at some stage, so perhaps that may see Coleman hold his spot, as he deservedly should after such an excellent debut.

PLAYERS TO TARGET NEXT ROUND

Normally this would be filled with players from the Sixers, particularly their DPP BAT / BWL choice Tom Curran, as they’re on the double. We’d also be inclined to include the Hurricanes’ Matthew Wade, but with the weather in Sydney looking decidedly inclement over the next few days there’s an obvious caution around the Sixers, the Hurricanes, and the Thunder.

PETER SIDDLE | ADELAIDE STRIKERS | BWL | 56.8 avg. | $160,100

A value pick at just on $130,000 prior to the start of Round 8, Siddle was outstanding against the bottom-ranked Renegades in that round, picking up 128 points. Against the Heat in Round 9 he had little to work with thanks to his batters, yet still snagged 43 points – thanks to 12 points for batting and a whopping 25 for his Economy Rate. As the season gets toward the business end, the veteran quick is sure to reward the few who have selected him – his ownership is only at 7.1% but as he is due to have the double in Round 12, there’s every chance that his ownership could more than double from this point on as he still remains affordable and a fairly safe bet to perform strongly from round-to-round.

AB DE VILLIERS | BRISBANE HEAT | BAT | 73.0 avg. | $222,100

If you didn’t make AB a focus prior to his debut for the Heat – and judging from his 10% ownership in the game, many didn’t prioritise the South African superstar – then it could be time to do so. He didn’t have much of a chance to really impose himself on the competition in his first outing for the Heat thanks to Pattinson’s heroics with the ball, but he still made his time in the middle count, totalling 73 points and looking completely in control throughout. With rain likely to cause havoc for the Sixers, the Hurricanes, and the Thunder, you could definitely do worse than focus on the biggest star in the Big Bash.

NATHAN COULTER-NILE | MELBOURNE STARS | BWL | 49.4 avg. | $156,300

With Dale Steyn – the other big South African to debut in the Big Bash in BBL|09 – back in South Africa, former Scorcher Nathan Coulter-Nile is primed to claim his position as the leader of the Stars’ pace attack. It’s an imposing and formidable line-up, comprised of Coulter-Nile, Rauf, Coleman, and the oft-ignored Dan Worrall. The bevy of options at Hussey’s disposal might mean that they are rotated in and out as conditions suit, but it is likely that Coulter-Nile will now be a permanent member of their arsenal having already had a match off in recent times.

PLAYERS TO AVOID NEXT ROUND

It’s time to attack the Englishmen, with the performances of various imports from our feudal overlords being decidedly lacklustre this summer. With Brisbane Heat’s Tom Banton gone, it’s time for a Brexit from your SuperCoach squads.

PHIL SALT | ADELAIDE STRIKERS | BAT | 31.3 avg. | $97,900

Opening the batting alongside Jake Weatherald, Salt has been the minor party at the top of the order for the Strikers, making just one 50 in nine games. Worse still, that 54 accounts for a huge chunk of his total 129 runs scored in BBL|09, so while his Strike Rate of 141.76 is solid, he’s simply not batting for long enough to make use of his power. Now owned by just 3.2% of all players, it’s time to go full Cam White and cancel plans to sprinkle any Salt into your SuperCoach squad.

David Miller of the Hurricanes has been skittled for too few runs too often
David Miller of the Hurricanes has been skittled for too few runs too often

DAVID MILLER | HOBART HURRICANES | BAT | 17.1 avg. | $58,500

Touted as one of the biggest imports at the start of the season, Miller has been a massive disappointment – in nine times at the crease he’s only made 91 runs in total, with a highest score of 25, and a Strike Rate of just on 110. Arguably coming in slightly lower in the order than would be ideal for a batsman with such supposed power hitting ability, he’s only struck four 6s and two 4s in his minimal time in the middle. Jettison him faster than you can say ‘Irish backstop’.

LIAM LIVINGSTONE | PERTH SCORCHERS | BAT / BWL | 52.7 avg. | $159,600

He has DPP status but he’s barely been used with the ball – even more disappointingly, the few times that Mitch Marsh has thrown him the rock he has been able to take a wicket, capturing four wickets from just 7.1 overs bowled at a fairly decent Economy Rate of 6.98. Livingstone’s Strike Rate with the bat in hand is impressive, coming in at just on 150, but he’s simply not staying at the crease for long periods of time, with just two 50s to his name in ten innings.

CAPTAIN’S CHOICE

Mitch Marsh may have completed his double round with a galling loss at home, but he remains one of the form players in the competition – no one else comes close to his three-round average of 164.3 SuperCoach points. Of active players, his teammate Jhye Richardson is right up there, while Josh Inglis as well as the Stars’ Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell are the only others averaging over 100 over that same time period. When it comes to Sixers on the double, Tom Curran is the obvious answer if you’re determined to take advantage of the double double, but with the weather in Sydney looking decidedly inclement over the next few days – and the Sixers featuring first at the SCG and then in a local derby against the Thunder – it could be a case of acting with caution when it comes to selecting anyone from them. When in doubt as to who to place the armband on, you can always go with the ‘safe’ option and pick Rashid Khan from the Strikers.
