KFC SuperCoach: Shane Warne’s young guns who will dominate BBL10

The BBL has provided a springboard for many young talents to international stardom. Shane Warne nominates five players who can make that leap in BBL10.

KFC SuperCoach BBL: Shane Warne's top young guns to watch

Rookies can make or break your KFC SuperCoach season.

Get them right and you’ll build enough bank to ensure you have all the big guns when it matters.

Get them wrong and you’ll burn your all-important trades playing catch up.

Spin king and KFC SuperCoach ambassador Shane Warne is bullish about the level of young talent signed on for BBL10.

“There’s some many good young players here in Australia, so we’re very, very lucky,” he said.

“It’s so nice in your (KFC) SuperCoach team when some of these guys come good because you get big points.”

These are the five young guns Warney is most excited about.

Cameron Green has enjoyed a superb start to the summer.

Cameron Green (Perth Scorchers) $62,500 BAT-BWL

Green’s sky-high potential was obvious last season, but a back issue meant he was limited to a role as a lower-order batsman for Perth Scorchers. The tall all-rounder is seemingly over that problem and has been bowling in recent matches — including against India. He continued his breakout summer with a century against the tourists and is primed to take the BBL by storm. The only kicker is he possibly won’t feature until Round 3 of KFC SuperCoach if he’s involved in the second tour game against India.

WARNEY SAYS: “He’s set the world on fire in the last couple of years — especially this year. Coming off some big numbers.”

Will Sutherland (Melbourne Renegades) $79,900 BAT-BWL

Sutherland broke through for 10 games for the Renegades last season. He’s built on the promise he showed in those games with Victoria, snaring six wickets in three matches in the Sheffield Shield this season. The Renegades will have to wait to unleash him in BBL10 after he was selected by Australia A but he’ll have an important role to play when he features — especially before Mohammad Nabi arrives.

WARNEY SAYS: “Will Sutherland will bowl at the death … so he could pick up some cheap wickets. He slogs it at the end of an innings too.”

Ollie Davies is one of the most exciting young batsmen in Australia.

Ollie Davies (Sydney Thunder) $42,000 BAT

It seems only a matter of time until Davies thunders his way onto the BBL scene. The powerful batsman, who blasted 207 from 115 balls at the under-19 national carnival in 2018, is one of the top batting prodigys in the country. He hit 17 sixes in that innings to put himself on the radar and has hammered 96 off 37 balls and 116 not out from 56 balls in recent games for his NSW club side Manly-Warringah. Now it’s just whether he can break into a power-packed Thunder middle-order.

WARNEY SAYS: “What a young player he could be. I think he will do well.”

Shane Warne remains bullish about Mackenzie Harvey’s talents.

Mackenzie Harvey (Melbourne Renegades) $62,500 BAT

Harvey seemed destined for higher honours when he hit a 39-ball fifty against England’s full attack in a tour game as a 17-year-old. He hasn’t quite lived up to that billing since and faces a make-or-break season with the Renegades after being on the fringes of selection last summer. He showed glimpses of his talent in BBL08 but needs to cement himself in the Renegades team before being considered for KFC SuperCoach. Still, Warney is a fan.

WARNEY SAYS: “He’s been around with the Renegades for a little while, hasn’t really nailed it, but is a quality player. He will get better and better for the experience over the last couple of seasons.”

Jack Edwards is facing a big summer for the Sixers.

Jack Edwards (Sydney Sixers) $62,500 BAT

Only a lack of opportunity has stalled Edwards’ T20 development after a promising start to his BBL career with the Sixers. The arrival of Josh Philippe pushed Edwards down the batting order and he hasn’t reached 20 in the past two editions of the BBL. With several big names unavailable early and Tom Curran withdrawing, Edwards has an opportunity to fulfil the promise he showed a few campaigns ago.

WARNEY SAYS: “I’ve heard he’s cut the locks off, they’re gone. I reckon it’s a bit like Samson, he won’t lose his power, he’ll be OK. He’s looking pretty good with the stick and he’ll be all right in the field.”
