BBL paceman David Moody set to move to Victoria, linked with Melbourne

A Big Bash League quick is poised to cross the country in search of more opportunities and is in line to replace one of Victorian Premier Cricket’s biggest stars. PAUL AMY and TYLER LEWIS report.

Western Australian quickie David Moody has his kit packed and is on the move to Victorian Premier Cricket.

The 28-year-old is heading to Melbourne in the hope of breaking into the Victorian squad.

The right-arm paceman has been linked with reigning premier Melbourne, where his great mate Charles Lill opens the batting.

Moody had one-match cameos with the Demons in 2021-22 and again last season, after the Melbourne Renegades signed him as a replacement player when Zak Evans suffered injury.

The Gades said at the time that Moody was a “ready-made fast bowling option’’.

He had earlier BBL stints at the Hobart Hurricanes and Perth Scorchers.

“We’d love to have a player of his ability,’’ Melbourne coach Ben Vague said of Moody.

“We’re working through a few things. You can certainly say he’ll most likely join Melbourne.’’

Vague said he understood Moody would spend time with the Victorian squad in the pre-season.

The 195cm fast bowler was given a rookie contract with WA in 2014-15 and made his Sheffield Shield debut that same season, taking four first-innings wickets against NSW.

In 34 Shield games he’s nabbed exactly 100 wickets – and his best return, 5-59, came against the Vics in 2016-17.

As the Demons sweat on his signature, they have farewelled premiership paceman Kieran Elliott, who is heading to Tasmania.

Similar to Moody, he hopes the move will be a path to first-class cricket.

The 27-year-old finished last season with 45 wickets, second only in the Premier aggregate to new Victorian squad member Matt Fotia (49).

He captured 4-74 off 20.4 overs in the first innings in the grand final against Carlton after returns of 5-53 against Footscray in the quarter-final and 5-53 against Ringwood in the preliminary final.

Vague believes Elliott will quickly make a big impression in Tasmania. He is being linked with the Clarence club.

“Rapt for him. Very happy for him,’’ Vague said.

“I’d expect him to start in their Second XI and I reckon he can play some Shield.

“He’s definitely ready for it. There should be some opportunity for him because Tassie have lost (Jackson Bird) and Peter Siddle.’’

Melbourne has another potential recruit in Greenvale’s Josh Trembearth, who is expected to leave the Kangaroos.

Trembearth averaged only 13 last season but in 2021-22 put up 544 runs at 38.9, with centuries against Carlton and Essendon.

Trembearth was one of the players who put his name to an email in February, threatening to boycott matches unless the club re-signed senior coach Damian Shanahan.

The Roos were unmoved, letting Shanahan go at the end of the season.

Vague said Melbourne had spoken to Trembearth and invited him to pre-season training, but made no guarantees about where he would play.

The Roos have a new captain in Justin Galeotti, who has returned from the Cricket Tasmania Premier League.
