Australian captain Pat Cummins conceded he did not have full faith in DRS technology while Indian counterpart Rohit Sharma bemoaned his side’s bad luck after Yashasvi Jaiswal’s controversial dismissal played a key role in the tourists’ fourth Test downfall.

The Aussies are on the verge of regaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after sensationally running through India on Monday afternoon at the MCG, with the tourists losing 7-34 inside 21 overs to crumble to a 184-run defeat in notional pursuit of 340.

Australia clinched victory with less than an hour remaining of a classic Test played in front of an Australian record crowd of 373,691 across the five days.

It means only an Indian win in the fifth Test in Sydney beginning on Friday will keep the trophy in the tourists’ grasp. India has held the BGT since 2017, winning four consecutive Test series against Australia.

Jaiswal provided by far the most resistance for India, making 84 before his innings came to a contentious end following a DRS review for caught behind off Cummins. The decision was sent upstairs where after a lengthy deliberation third umpire Sharfadoullah sent the opener packing despite no spike appearing on Snicko.

Jaiswal didn’t leave the field immediately after the decision, remonstrating with on-field umpires Michael Gough and Joel Wilson before eventually trudging off.

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla took to X to claim Jaiswal was clearly not out. “Yashaswi jayaswal (sic) was clearly not out. Third umpire should have taken note of what technology was suggesting. While over ruling field umpire third umpire should have solid reasons,” Shukla wrote.

Warren Brennan, whose company BBG Sports operates Snicko, explained why there was no spike as the ball appeared to move past Yashasvi Jaiswal’s glove.

“That was one of the glance shots where there isn’t any noise so Snicko shows nothing only ambient noise,” Brennan told this masthead.

“I checked with the audio director and he said there was no noise either. Probably only Hot Spot could have resolved that one.”

Hot Spot is not in operation this summer after Fox Cricket dumped it, pointing to criticism of the technology.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma said that while he believed Jaiswal had probably made contact with the ball, the tourists had also been unlucky.

“I don’t know what to make of that, because the technology didn’t show anything. But with the naked eye, it seemed that he did touch something,” Rohit said.

“So I don’t know how the umpires want to use the technology, but in all fairness, I think he did touch the ball.

“But again, it’s about the technology, which we all know, is not 100 per cent. But again, like I said, we don’t want to really look too much into that. It’s just that we are more often than not, we are the ones falling on the wrong side of it…I feel we’ve been little unfortunate.”

Cummins said he had been in no doubt that Jaiswal had hit the ball.

“I think it was just clear that he hit it. Heard a noise, saw deviation. So was absolutely certain that he hit it. As soon as we referred it, you can see him drop his head and basically acknowledge that he hit it,” Cummins said.

“UltraEdge (an alternative provider to Snicko), I don’t think anyone has complete confidence in and (it) didn’t really show much. But fortunately, there’s enough other evidence to show it was clearly out.”

Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar queried why Snicko was employed if umpires didn’t have full faith in it.

Cummins jokes about ball that resulted in Jaiswal's controversial dismissal

“If the evidence of the technology is not to be taken, why have it at all? That is something that would definitely be the query as far as the Indians are concerned,” Gavaskar told Channel 7.

The match had appeared destined for a draw before Rishabh Pant (30) mindlessly tried to blast Travis Head to the long-on boundary, only to be caught in the deep by Mitch Marsh, triggering the collapse.

Cummins won his second successive Johnny Mullagh Medal as player of the match as he finished with six wickets for the match to go with scores of 49 and 41.

Scott Boland claimed 3-39 on day five to add another chapter to the Victorian icon’s book of Boxing Day Test lore.
