David Warner is targeting a return for New South Wales next week as he attempts to play through significant pain while his overseas franchise commitments pile up.

Warner, 34, revealed that he still has a slight tear in his groin tendon and the injury would cause him grief for most of 2021.

The damaging opener said on Monday that he was another two weeks away from making his return and then confirmed on Tuesday that he had circled the Marsh Cup match at Adelaide Oval against South Australia on March 4 in his diary.

The NSW Blues will nurse Warner through March before he jets to India to captain Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.

“It’s going to aggravate me for the next six to nine months,” Warner said on Monday.

“But I’m sure the medicos will help me out there.”

Cricket Australia medicos are confident that Sunrisers will take care of their prized opener, who has conceded that T20’s frenetic tempo and cluttered schedule loomed as a challenge for his hampered body.

Sunrisers are run by Aussies Tom Moody (director of cricket), Trevor Bayliss (coach) and Brad Haddin (assistant), while physio Theo Kapakoulakis is another local.

Just hours after Warner’s revelation that he would have to soldier on this year he was taken in The Hundred draft.

News Corp can reveal that Southern Braves forked out the top price of $178,000 for Warner, who will team up with Jofra Archer, Andre Russell and Marcus Stoinis in Southampton.

The England and Wales Cricket Board conducted The Hundred draft virtually and in total secret, with franchises told to keep their selections under wraps for a mega announcement 24 hours later.

A staggering 252 overseas players were competing for the seven remaining international slots to play in the inaugural edition of the 100-ball format.

It is understood that Melbourne Stars batsman Nicholas Pooran was the first player drafted and Warner also had his name called.
