Matthew Wade has been dumped from the Aussie one-day squad in favour of Tim Paine.

SELECTORS’ patience with Glenn Maxwell has run out — again — after both he and Matthew Wade were dumped from Australia’s one-day squad.

Despite a storming domestic summer with the bat, Australian captain Steve Smith says Maxwell needs to learn to “train smarter” — an indication the Victorian has much more to work on to win back trust than simply improving his batting average if he wants to fight his way back for next year’s World Cup.

News Limited revealed yesterday Test Tim incumbent Paine would get the one-day nod at the expense of Wade while Maxwell was axed for the five-match series.

Chris Lynn has effectively been chosen in his place, with the Queenslander still inconvenienced by a shoulder injury in the field after eight months on the outer. The all-round duties are set to be covered by Marcus Stoinis and Mitchell Marsh.

Smith admitted there were deeper reasons at play for Maxwell’s axing, hinting at an attitude clash.

“The way he trains — I think he can train a little bit smarter,” said Smith.

If Maxwell learns to bat more intelligently at training, Smith said there was no doubt the 29-year-old would walk back into Australia’s best ODI XI.

National selector Trevor Hohns said an average of 22 in his last 20 matches had sealed Maxwell’s fate, but it was in his power to win his spot back.

“No-one is in any doubt about Glenn’s ability or his potential to produce matchwinning contributions with the bat,” Hohns said.

“What we have wanted from him is more consistency. Glenn is still absolutely in our thoughts but for this series we have decided to look again at Chris Lynn, who is now back playing once more after the shoulder injury that hampered him when we picked him against Pakistan in this format 12 months ago.”

It hasn’t been a great day for Wade, the wicketkeeper first reprimanded over a send-off in the Big Bash and then forced to hand the ODI gloves over to Test incumbent Paine.

His latest snub could be the death-knock for his international career.

After being dropped from the Test team in India, former Victorian Wade — despite being Tasmania’s preferred gloveman ahead of Paine — was overlooked in favour of his teammate for the First Ashes Test.

Selectors affirmed the notion that Paine — who had not played a Test in almost seven years when he was recalled at the beginning of the Ashes — was no stopgap, giving him the opportunity to become the centrepiece behind the stumps of Australia’s World Cup plans.

He’ll play in his first ODI in more than six years at the MCG on January 14.

“Tim forced his way into the Twenty20 International squad last summer, and after coming back into the Test squad at the beginning of the Ashes series he has made a terrific contribution with bat and gloves,” Hohns said.

“He deserves his opportunity in this form of the game and the challenge for Matthew is to return to the type of form that saw him score a One-Day International hundred against Pakistan last summer.”

West Australians Andrew Tye and Jhye Richardson have won spots as back-up fast bowlers.
