Justin Langer has landed his first coaching role since his acrimonious exit from the Australian team, with the former Test opener joining the Indian Premier League’s Lucknow Super Giants.
Langer, 52, replaces former England coach Andy Flower at the helm of the IPL franchise.
The West Australian last year turned down a short-term contract extension offered by Cricket Australia after almost four years as men’s team coach.
He was at the helm for an Ashes series win, a drawn series in England and a Twenty20 World Cup title however his position became endangered after relationships with some players became strained in relation to his at-times volatile nature.
Langer had been the subject of talks about becoming coach of the Big Bash League’s Hobart Hurricanes however that did not eventuate. He has remained involved in cricket via the media, including commentating for Channel Seven.
He will be reunited with all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, one of Lucknow’s star players.
“Lucknow Super Giants are on the journey of building a great story in the IPL. We all have a role to play in that journey and I am excited to be a part of the team moving forward,” Langer said.
An expansion team that debuted last year, Lucknow made the playoffs in its first two seasons.
