Venues for the event, which will be held across Australia, were on Tuesday confirmed with the iconic MCG set to host both the men’s and women’s finals in an unsurprising coup for Victoria.

The tournament’s launch came just days before Australia’s first match of the Twenty20 tri-series at the SCG on Saturday night, which Smith — among others — has been rested for ahead of the Test team’s tour of South Africa in March.

Only one player from Australia’s Ashes-winning squad will feature in the Twenty20 tri-series, that player being David Warner who has been picked as captain.

“It’s obviously not ideal right now that all the Test players except for Davey won’t be playing in the T20 tri-series with England and New Zealand,” Smith said.

“It’s been that way for a couple of years which is disappointing but it’s hard to play everything.

“I think there will be enough cricket, international T20, the next couple of years for guys to jell together and try and find the right balance.

“A lot of strategy has come into T20 cricket now and the right match ups with the right guys bowling to the right batters and things like that. There will be a lot of strategy around it and I think (it’s about having) the right personnel in to get the job done.”

The world’s 16 best men’s teams will take part in the next World T20 tournament, to be held from October 18 to November 15 in 2020.

Smith said he was “already looking forward to” the event on home soil, which brought back memories of the 2015 World Cup which Australia claimed victory in on the MCG.

“Thinking back to 2015 ... just the support that we had for those six weeks was something incredible,” Smith said.

“It was incredibly special to be a part of so I’d love to be part of the World T20 and captain that side but it is a couple of years away.”

West Indies won the last World T20, which was held in India in 2016.
