IT’S another gold medal for the Commonwealth Games — the most expensive beer in Australia.
While stadiums across the world are notorious for whopping prices of food and drinks, the offerings at the Commonwealth Games have lifted the bar to a whole new level.
The equivalent of a can of XXXX Gold (375ml) costs $8.50 at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, $1 more than a bigger schooner (425ml) of full-strength beer at Suncorp Stadium on State of Origin night.
Punters have been outraged over high prices during the opening days of the Games, with one spectator complaining of paying almost $40 for four sushi rolls.
One irate beer drinker said his publican father would “turn in his grave” if he knew how much he had paid for a can of XXXX Gold.
Others complained there were no prices on display at swimming food stands, where a humble pie was $6.50.
“You line up for 20 minutes and then they sting you with the prices,” one disgruntled swim fan said.
The prices do not compare favourably to other venues around the country.
At the MCG, a schooner of full-strength beer is $8.40, meaning more alcohol, more of it and for less than the cost of a cup of XXXX Gold at the Games.
Oddly, a schooner of Gold at the opening ceremony was cheaper than a 375ml cup at the swimming.
A glass of wine at the swimming costs $10 — $2 more than at Suncorp Stadium.
Servings of fish and chips and calamari and chips at the swimming were almost $2 more than a similar offering at Suncorp Stadium, while 600ml bottles of water at the MCG are $1.20 cheaper than the aquatic centre and $1.50 cheaper than at Carrara Stadium.
However, in a statement GOLDOC rejected the notion that food and drink was more expensive than elsewhere.
“Pricing for food and beverages across all Commonwealth Games venues is consistent with pricing in place across all major events and stadiums for Queensland in 2018,” it said.
