MITCH Larkin is happy to now be able to let himself go.
Taking home five gold medals from the Commonwealth Games, Larkin is looking forward to a week of excess in the food stakes. Plus, he’ll grow his hair.
“We are lucky, the chlorine kills most of our hair so we are pretty hairless anyway,” Larkin told Games Confidential.
“But yeah, I will be pretty unmanscaped and lazy and maybe putting on a few kilos in the next few weeks. I will enjoy myself when I get home, forget the diet and have a week out of the pool and undo some of the hard work we’ve done just to get ready for Pan Pacs (Pan Pacific Swimming Championships) and do it all again.”
With his thick rimmed glasses, the 24-year-old is often affectionately referred to as the Clark Kent of swimming when out of the pool. When swimming, he’s known as Superman.
“It is a nice bit of humour but at the same time such an honour to be compared to Clark Kent and Superman in the water is incredible,” he said.
Meanwhile, Larkin acknowledged the difficulty many athletes face once they go back to normal life after a big meet like the Commonwealth Games.
“We call it post-games depression,” he said. “It is a big thing. You leave the games on such a high and the high has been building for so long. You’ve got your team mates around you and you wake up at home and you are by yourself. It really sucks so it is important to talk about.”
