How to see Prince Charles, Camilla during royal visit to Queensland

PRINCE Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall will arrive in Queensland for the opening of the Commonwealth Games – but royal watchers can say g’day in Brisbane first.

Royals prepare to head down under

QUEENSLANDERS hoping for a glimpse of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will not be short on chances when they touch down in Brisbane to open the Commonwealth Games.

The visit will fall just shy of the record longest time spent in Queensland by a member of the royal family – held by the Queen and Prince Philip, who spent six days here in 1954.

Before heading to the Gold Coast tonight, their Royal Highnesses will visit Old Government House at QUT amid high security for an official welcome to Australia that will include an inspection of the guard and 21-gun salute at Kangaroo Point.

A walk through the Botanic Gardens directly after at 1.15pm will provide what Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk described as a historic opportunity for the public to come face-to-face with the heir apparent and his wife.

Later this afternoon, the couple will visit Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, meeting with children from hospital-made TV show Juiced TV.

Abbi Head will greet the royal pair when they visit the hospital and give them a teddy bear for Prince William and wife Kate’s new baby, due later this month.

The 13-year-old, who has ewing’s sarcoma, said she was “overwhelmed, excited, like hyper” to meet Prince Charles and the Duchess.

“The most exciting thing is probably being able to see them to say hello,” she said. “It’s the future King and Queen.”

At tonight’s ceremony, the Prince and Duchess will read out Her Majesty’s customary message, officially opening the Games. Other duties for the pair will include presenting medals at the swimming finals and a tour of the Athletes Village.

EXPLAINER: Prince Charles back in Australia

Before heading back to the UK on Friday, Camilla, 70, is expected to host a tea to celebrate the Women of the Commonwealth as part of the WOW Festival.

The British media reported that Camilla’s fear of flying was the reason she would not complete the whole tour. Charles, 69, will continue the tour solo, venturing to Bundaberg on Friday to attend a community festival celebration at the Bundaberg Rum Distillery.

The Premier announced last week the Prince would attend a meeting on coral resilience in the southern Great Barrier Reef and forestry roundtable in the Daintree Rainforest. While in Cairns, he will tour HMAS Leeuwin and the local Royal Flying Doctor Service base, and watch the Commonwealth Games women’s basketball.

He will visit Vanuatu, the Gove Peninsula and Darwin in the Northern Territory, wrapping up the tour on April 10.
