CHANNEL Seven has been slammed for snubbing Australian designers by dressing its commentators and presenters in an international label during its Commonwealth Games coverage.

While Australia may be a proud host country for the games on the Gold Coast, the host broadcaster cut a deal to dress its big stars in Swiss-owned clothing giant, Gant.

“It is so strange they don’t use an Australian brand,” designer Alex Perry told News Corp.

“We are so on supporting Australian farmers and growers and produce but when it comes to fashion, it doesn’t seem to matter. There are plenty of iconic Australian brands synonymous with sport, I just don’t understand why they wouldn’t support them.”

Australian athletes official uniform for the opening ceremony was designed by RM Williams while Italian sports brand Diadora created their casual training wear and our sports men and women wear Puma sneakers.

Channel Seven have been advertising the international brand as its partner throughout coverage of the Gold Coast games.

TV hosts, reporters and presenters have been donning pink, blue and white collared shirts made by the popular international retailer, which originally formed in the US but has long been headquartered and operated in Sweden.

“A lot of effort goes into getting these decisions right. In the end, we have to work with a brand that is ready and willing to partner with us in what can be challenging conditions,” Seven said in a statement. “Clothing for our team of hosts, commentators and reporters must look sharp regardless of where, when and weather conditions. And the Gant range is performing well on the Gold Coast. It’s a great partnership.”

Vogue Editor-in-Chief Edwina McCann said it was disappointing not to see local designers showcased at the games.

“It is a lost opportunity to show off the best of Australian fashion to international and local audiences of the Commonwealth,” she said.

Joe Farage, designer and owner of fashion label, Farage, agreed.

"We dress many TV presenters and personalities,” he said. “The Commonwealth Games would have been an amazing opportunity to showcase our brand, or any other Australian brand, here and overseas. ”
