It’s better known for producing surfers then skiers but a Central Coast local with a history of success has won big on the slopes in Europe overnight.
Central Coast local Matt Graham ended the 2020 season on a high and with a gold medal after fog contributed to a dramatic finish to the dual mogul FIS Word Cup in Idre Fjäll, Sweden.
The Gosford local, who started skiing at age seven in Perisher and won silver at the Sochi Winter Olympics, shared his gold medal with Swedish local Ludvig Fjallstrom after a heavy fog rolled in on the course and forced the event’s early cancellation.
“It would have been fun to be able to finish the event and see how things would have turned out, but you can’t control the weather,’’ Graham, 26 said.
“I was happy to share the top step of the podium with Ludvig. It is his first World Cup win and he is a good mate of mine as we have been competing on the World Cup tour together for 10 years now.”
It was the 16th major medal of Graham’s career (three gold, six silver, seven 7 bronze) and his first World Cup win since January 2017.
After three events, the Australian is in third place on the World Cup standings, with teammate Brodie Summers in fifth.
