Broncos star’s surprising take on Smith rumours, but there’s a $600k elephant in the room

Broncos No. 9 Jake Turpin is all for recruiting Cameron Smith but there’s another experienced hooker who may be a more likely candidate.

Broncos hooker Jake Turpin has welcomed any bid by the club to try and lure Storm skipper Cameron Smith to Red Hill in 2021, but Brisbane’s other hooker might put a spanner in the works.

Anthony Seibold admitted during the week that the Broncos would be interested in signing Smith for next season and his current No.9 who returns from injury against the Sharks in Round 12 is all for it.

However Andrew McCullough is still technically contracted to the Broncos on a $600,000 deal and could opt to come back to the club in 2021.

“If that’s what the club wants, that’s what they want,” Turpin told The Courier Mail of the Smith interest.

“If he was to ever come up here (to Brisbane) it would put a few bows in my armour because I would learn so much from him.

“Every young hooker aspires to be Cam Smith and be as good as he is, if you are half as good as him you are going pretty good.”

However Sam Thaiday believes the club should think about bringing veteran Andrew McCullough back next season after he suffered a season-ending injury for the Knights.

“Definitely (he’d love to come back to the Broncos),” Thaiday said on WWOS.

“He has always loved the Broncos from such a young age and he’d love to come back.

“I think he’d like to be back in Brisbane right now, especially after the injury that occurred on the weekend. But I would love to see him back here.

“I think if he (Seibold) did want to bring some senior players back into our squad to help some of these young guys, I think Andrew would be fantastic at that job and that role.”

Smith is weighing up whether to retire or extend his glittering career into a 20th season and with Harry grant and Brandon Smith on the Storm’s books, his future may be elsewhere.

The Broncos are reeling in 15th position on the ladder and are one loss and one Bulldogs win away from the dreaded wooden spoon position.

There is no doubting the experience that 37-year-old Smith, who has played 422 NRL games would bring to the young Broncos squad.

“For Cam to go to any club would be massive,” Turpin said.

“He is the ‘GOAT’ (Greatest Of All Time) in my eyes, so he would bring everything you need in a club.

“He would bring so much wealth of experience and he would definitely help any club he went to, including the Broncos.”
