No one missed the moment former boxing world champ Mike Tyson slapped his opponent Jake Paul full on the face during their weigh in ahead of Saturday’s bout.
But there was another outrageous moment from Tyson on stage that may have been lost after the scuffle at Irving, Texas.
Tyson, who weighed in at 227.2 pounds (103kg), had already asserted his manhood prior to the fracas when he grabbed his crotch and gave it a tug while on the scales.
“I know the slap is going viral. But,” X account Boxing n BBG wrote as it shared the footage, accompanied by laughing emojis.
The 58-year-old is controversially set to take on Paul, a man half his age at 27, in his first officially sanctioned fight since the mid 2000s.
Paul tipped the scales at 228.4 pounds (103.6kg) on Thursday, US time, before the two squared off for the traditional photo opportunity.
But the drama kicked off when Paul appeared to be taunting Tyson, who reacted by slapping the YouTuber hard across the face.
The crowd in attendance gasped and Tyson had to be held back while Paul blew kisses at him and tapped his own cheek.
The blow appeared to rock Paul for just a moment, with his head flying back.
“Talking’s over,” Tyson said before making his exit with members of his entourage.
Paul, the 27-year-old Youtuber-cum-boxer, insisted he had not been hurt by Tyson’s open-handed slap.
“I didn’t even feel it – he’s angry,” he said.
“He’s an angry little elf … cute slap buddy.”
Paul concluded his remarks with an expletive-laden pledge to knock Tyson out, before roaring theatrically into a microphone: “He must die.”
Tyson is reportedly being paid $20 million for the officially sanctioned bout in Texas, which will be comprised of eight two-minute rounds.
The contest, being streamed live on Netflix, has divided opinion across the boxing world, with many prominent figures decrying the prospect of Tyson lacing up his gloves nearly 40 years after his professional debut and 19 years after his last official fight.
Meanwhile, boxing promoter Eddie Hearn believes there might be an “agreement” in place between Tyson and Paul about how the fight will pan out.
Hearn’s rival promoter Frank Warren echoed those sentiments. “Mike Tyson is 58 years of age and he shouldn’t be fighting.
“It’s as simple as that.
“Anyone with an ounce of brains knows that it is ridiculous. You can be on a motorway stuck in a traffic jam and you get to the end of it and all it is people who have stopped to look at a crash – and that’s what this is.”
