He’s known as the Russian Jake Paul, and now Sydney-based slugger Sergey Vorobiev has thrown his hat in the ring to fight Nikita Tszyu next.
A 20-2-1 boxer and YouTube sensation, Vorobiev has joined the Nikita Tszyu sweepstakes after posting a provocative video to social media on Monday.
The fourth ranked super-welterweight in Australia after Tim and Nikita Tszyu and Wade Ryan, Vorobiev tried to entice the younger Tszyu brother into a fight later in the year.
BOXING: NIKITA TSZYU V MAZOUDIER | WED 28 AUG 7PM AEST | Order Now with Main Event on Kayo Sports.
Tszyu takes on Koen Mazoudier in a pay-per-view main event fight on Wednesday night, but already has a host of fighters waiting to take him on.
“Hey bro, it’s me, number four,” said Vorobiev, who has 148,000 subscribers and tens of millions of views on YouTube. “Good luck with your fight, I’ll be there.
“I want to help you get the win, so let me help you.”
He then broke a boxing gym taboo by sharing sparring footage of himself sending Koen Mazoudier to one knee with a left hook to the ribs.
“See? Body shots – I think you remember this punch too,” Vorobiev said, referencing a much talked about sparring session he had with Tszyu last year.
“Maybe after this fight, you’ll finally be ready to get in the ring with me. Good luck. I’m waiting.”
Vorobiev’s trainer, Tony del Vecchio said he wasn’t too happy with his fighter releasing the sparring footage, and had to set the record straight about the sessions with Tszyu.
“He didn’t drop Nikita. I’m going to correct that one,” he said. “They had a spirited spar, and they each gave as good as they got.
“That’s why he’s asking for that fight. Those spars, you could’ve charged money at the door. It was unbelievable.
“I had no control over that video, let’s just get that straight, but Sergey wants to make a stand.
“I love Koen and I’m going to apologise, but what do you do?”
Vorobiev broke his left hand five weeks before his Australian debut against Wade Ryan on the undercard to Tim Tszyu’s win over Brian Mendoza last October.
He lost that fight via decision, but is still adamant on landing a fight with Tszyu in the future.
“Sergey tagged me in that video today,” No Limit CEO George Rose told this masthead. “He’s got a lot of good energy.
“That’s what I like about a lot of our Australian boxers: they get it. They get they’re starting to understand how you can get a fight to happen.
“Nine times out of 10, if you put your hand up for a fight, it’s gonna happen.
“So, Sergey, he’s got good energy, and who knows who he ends up fighting in the future, but there’s plenty of great super-welterweights out there.”
