A former Australian UFC star and business partner with NRL superstar Nathan Cleary is being hailed a hero after saving a man’s life following a freak bike collapse in Sydney on Friday.
Ex-MMA fighter-turned-boxer Tyson Pedro, a close friend of Panthers champion Cleary, has rushed to the aid of a 46-year-old man who suffered a shocking double seizure in a Penrith park.
Pedro was embarking on a run ahead of his boxing debut against Kris Terzievski this Wednesday night in Penrith when the fighter was rocked by the sight of a man convulsing on a nearby footpath.
The man had fallen off his bike near Pedro, who rushed to be by his side, calling Triple-0 from his mobile phone as blood poured from the cyclist’s face.
It is understood the man suffered a second seizure as Pedro helped him to the ambulance, with the 33-year-old boxing convert later driving to Nepean Hospital to check on his condition.
An ex-SAS soldier, Pedro said his military training kicked in, but admits the vision of the man is still one of the most distressing images of his life.
“It was terrible to witness,” Pedro said of the horrific incident.
“I was freaking though because that part of the area hasn’t got a lot of mobile service, but thankfully I got through to 000.
“It was scary as.”
A friend of Pedro, who wished to remain anonymous, lauded the composure of the boxer, who has a stake in the Drink West beer company with NRL star Cleary and UFC heavyweight Tai Tuivasa.
“Tyson is a hero,” the friend said.
“The man could have easily died but Tyson stopped his run, stayed calm and made sure the man was looked after.
“After calling 000, he held the man and waited for paramedics to arrive.
“Tyson then followed the ambulance to hospital and was greeted by the man’s family, who said they will be forever grateful for what he did.
“Tyson spoke with the doctors after and they said the man will make a full recovery, which is wonderful news.”
A tearful Pedro announced his shock UFC retirement in March last year after a frustrating decision defeat to Vitor Petrino in Las Vegas, before later making the switch to boxing.
Once one of Australian MMA’s brightest young stars, his MMA career was plagued by injury. He was robbed of four of the best years of his career with constant ACL tears, leaving him as one of the UFC’s best unfulfilled talents.
Injury followed him to boxing, with his original fight against Terzievski postponed when he suffered a sickening elbow injury in June.
While shaken by this ordeal, Pedro is determined to fight on and his bout against former Australian heavyweight champion Terzievski, who beat Paul Gallen two years ago, will go ahead at Panthers Leagues Club.
“Tyson is ex-SAS so he went straight into life-saving mode,” the friend said.
“He is coping really well. He said his instincts just kicked in.
“The fight will go ahead. Tyson is fine to fight, but it’s a pretty horrific thing for him to deal with just a few days before the fight.”
