Aussie middleweight champion Rob Whittaker eyes UFC super fight against Jon Jones

UFC middleweight champion Rob Whittaker has dropped a bombshell, revealing plans for a super fight with Jon Jones.

UFC middleweight champion Rob Whittaker has dropped a bombshell, revealing plans for a super fight with Jon Jones.

Speaking on Melbourne’s Submission Radio, Whittaker outlined plans to move up in weight and challenge arguably the greatest martial artist in history in the near future.

Whittaker’s bold call comes as he and new interim middleweight champ Israel Adesanya continue to trade verbal blows following the latter’s win over American Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 236 on Sunday.

“He’s kind of cleaned out his division,” Whittaker said of Jones.

“It’s one of those things, like, yeah, we’ll have to wait and see. I’m gonna fight Adesanya, then I’ll be a little free myself.”

Whittaker then confirmed he is willing to beef-up in order to challenge light heavyweight champion Jones.

“I’ll definitely move up, not down, Whittaker said.

“But if he’s (Jones) looking for opponents, that’s a fight, that’s a great fight.

“I think I could just give him a run for his money. I surprise a lot of people and I’m full of tricks, and I think the intensity I bring into a fight is something that a lot of people aren’t prepared for.

“But he’s a great fighter, he’s super, super dangerous. I’m under no illusion how hard it would be, and yeah, I think it would be fun.”

Fighting Jones wasn’t always on Whittaker’s wish list.

But when he noticed Jones was looking for a challenge, the idea popped into his mind.

“Well, while I was making my run through the middleweight division and fighting in the division, it was very hard for me to plan outside of the division,” Whittaker said.

“Obviously, all my focus has been on the division and doing work there and making waves and making moves there.

“But seeing Jon Jones looking for opponents and the idea of moving up, I don’t hate that idea.”

As for how a potential fight between Adesanya and Jones would pan out, Whittaker gives Adesanya little chance.

“I think Jon Jones would kill him,” Whittaker laughed.

“Yeah, I think it’s silly, but then Israel just kind of take jabs and bites out of everyone, doesn’t he? Yeah, he’s got a big mouth.”

Whittaker and Adesanya are destined to meet to unify the middleweight title and the Sydneysider doesn’t see that bout lasting long either.

“Nah, it won’t be a war. Not with me and him,” Whittaker said.

“It’s gonna be short and sweet, brother, trust me. Oh I guarantee you, I guarantee you.”
