The dominant performance impressed commentators around the world.

Sky sports commentator John Dennen said ringside: “He was outstanding against Massey, getting on to the front foot, targeting the body with brilliant cruelty before punishing the gutsy challenger with hard shots to the head as well as he started going up through the gears.

“And he probably has more gears to go too.”

As expected, Opetaia said he next wants to fight the winner of Chris Billam-Smith and Gilberto Ramirez for a chance to unify the belts.

He has earned plenty of fans.

Boxing TV and radio commentator Adam Catterall posted on Twitter: “Jai Opetaia showed levels tonight. Knew Massey was tough so took his time and he pieced him up. Great corner stoppage by Joe Gallagher”.

Boxing commentator Mark Butcher also wrote: “Excellent intervention by Joe Gallagher there in the sixth. There’s not an ounce of quit in Jack Massey and he would have gone out on his shield when he didn’t need to. Opetaia was brutal and brilliant. A beast of a man.”

One boxing fan posted: “Jai Opetaia absolutely destroyed Jack Massey.”
