Geelong United has launched their founding WNBL memberships as they prepare to enter the national competition in October.

A founding membership gives fans exclusive information about attending games and how to meet the stars who will make up Geelong United’s inaugural WNBL side.

Geelong United chief executive Mark Neeld implored the people of Geelong to get behind the new team.

He conceded it was a leap of faith joining the WNBL but said its primary aim was to boost female basketball participation in the region.

“It starts in late October, which is a fantastic opportunity for us to see if we can activate the Geelong community to get behind women’s sport,” Neeld said.

“We’re doing it because the basketball community asked us, if we were ever in an opportunity to do it, to have a go at it for two reasons: to promote women playing sport, and to see if we can do something about increasing the number of women who play sport and stay in it.

“There’s a lot of research around that indicates if young females can build relationships with athletes at the highest level, it helps them join a sporting committee and stay in it.

“That’s why we’re doing it. It’s a financial risk, we certainly do need the community to get behind us, come and watch the women, buy a founding membership for $15 and get behind us.”

Geelong United signed WNBL rookie of the year and WNBA draft pick Jaz Shelley as their foundation player and also locked in Australian Opal Keely Froling.
