They looked flat as a pancake from the outset, but JackJumpers coach Scott Roth insists they “don’t have any excuses” for Sunday’s record 105-73 trouncing by Perth in Hobart.
It was the Jackies’ biggest-ever home defeat, and the emotional high of Friday’s overtime one point comeback win over Adelaide proved too big a task to back up.
A win would have allowed sixth-placed Tasmania (12-11) to leapfrog third-placed Perth on the table, but the defending NBL champions will start three straight road games against New Zealand on Thursday with their finals hopes on the line.
Roth said lightheartedly afterwards that bringing skipper Clint Steindl with him to the post-match press conference, after a 350th NBL game to forget, was “actually my deflection”.
“We don’t have any excuses, every team has a bunch of games or a break,” Roth said of the task of backing up the win over the 36ers.
“It’s been a very choppy schedule, I don’t think they (Perth) have played in seven or eight days and this is our fourth (game) in I think seven (days).
“To have that emotional ride we had the other night (against Adelaide)... but competing is competing and they were fantastic across the board.
“We just turn the page and move on, there’s no use harping on anything other than we get ready for another game. We get some rest, which we definitely all need.
“I brought Clint in here to take away from my terrible coaching, and let him talk about 350 games. He’s actually my deflection.
“It is what it is. You’re on the mountain top for a minute then you’re back down in the valley, it’s the nature of sports.”
Steindl insists his team can bounce back after Wildcats star Bryce Cotton tore them apart by scoring 26 of his 32 points in the first half.
“You ride the emotions of the win, and you’re straight back down to earth after a loss like that,” Steindl said.
“They played very well, Bryce got hot and we tried a few different things to get back on course, it just didn’t work.
“Sometimes in life you get a kick in the teeth when you’re celebrating something, but you move on and take small wins along the way.
“For that to happen today when I’m playing 350, I’d rather it happen to me than one of the young guys early in their career.”
