ARIA Award winning hip-hop artist L-Fresh has helped the Sydney Kings bring the team’s story to life with a powerful and catchy hip hop song, set to unveiled at the season launch on Tuesday.

In a bid to connect the Kings with the West Sydney community, the franchise have teamed up with L-Fresh (Sukhdeep Singh Bhogal) – a Liverpool-born rapper whose music covers a range of issues with a social justice focus.

To write the song, L-Fresh interviewed Kings players Jae-Sean Tate, Kuany Kuany and Craig Moller to hear their back stories and understand how they made it to the NBL.

Some of the song lyrics are taken directly from those conversations, adding to the authenticity of the track.

The composition, recording and filming of ‘We The Kings’ has come together in the last three weeks, with Sydney officials hoping the track will play a role in building the Clubs live attendance off the back of 80 per cent growth in general ticket sales the last year.

L-Fresh will perform the track live at Tuesday’s season launch at the Auburn Basketball Centre – the Kings’ new training base and home.

The song will feature as part of the club’s media campaign with TV, radio, outdoor and digital advertising.

The Kings are devoting more money to promotion than rival Sydney sporting teams like the NSW Waratahs, Sydney FC and the Western Sydney Wanderers.

Sydney’s strong focus on advertising is a major reason why the NBL has surpassed the A-League in terms of international eye balls on the sport.

Kings co-owner Paul Kind told The Daily Telegraph that the franchise intends to build a partnership with L-Fresh to work on specific projects in South West Sydney combining his influence with the Kings to make a difference in the community.

“I am confident no other sporting club in Sydney invests to drive crowds like Kings,” Kind said.

Basketball is more than a sport it’s a lifestyle fans associate the sport with music, fashion, celebrity and the entertainment the sport offers. We want to tap into that culture, particularly in Sydney’s West and the song and association with L-FRESH is a great example of that.

L-FRESH is passionate about West Sydney and we will work with him to identify community projects that embed basketball in The community - making the sport accessible to anyone who just loves the play.”

LYRICS:

CHORUS:

We the Kings / We stand tall

We don’t play / We gon’ ball

VERSE 1:

It’s a shootout, the only weapon is the rock

Yo I’m in it for the win, only limits is the clock

Anything can happen, show me everything you got

Jump on the bandwagon, are you with us or you not?

I was built for this, balling is a part of me

Champion at work bro appreciate the artistry

Picasso in the paint, throw it up, it’s a masterpiece

Kings on my chest, Sydney in my arteries

Undeniable, that’s why they call me a king

I’m triple threat bruh, I can shoot from the wing

Or I can drive through the lane and then bang on the rim

I got that Mamba Mentality, I’m playing to win

With a fire in my chest, yeah I’m frying all the nets

You can reach but you’re messing with a lion in his den

I’m a put you a poster if you trying it again

Flash flash, you about to go viral on the gram

CHORUS:

We the Kings / We stand tall

We don’t play / We gon’ ball

It’s our time / Here we go

We rise up, they gon fall (We the Kings)

POST-CHORUS:

We the Kings (x4)

VERSE 2:

What you know about the pain and the sacrifice?

Yo I come a long way from not having lights

They never see how I train to get my habits right

For when the big moment comes, I ain’t camera shy

I can hesitate and have the D paralysed

Or hit you with the head fake, you overanalyse

I see the double team coming like a Gemini

Cut from the baseline like a samurai

Uh yeah, I’m a make them banners fly

I come with a type a hustle that you can’t deny

Coz I’m from a city that you can’t multiply

My SQUAD come heavy, we not like them other guys

I take my opportunities, I don’t play with time

Win the 50-50 balls, I’m on a major grind

The throne’s there waiting for me, I’m a take what’s mine

You can never hold us down, we were made to rise

CHORUS:

We the kings / We stand tall

We don’t play / We gon’ ball

It’s our time / Here we go

We rise up, they gon fall (We the kings)

POST-CHORUS:

We the kings

We the kings

We the kings

We the kings
