‘My mini me’: Drake makes Liz Cambage revelation over mooted Toronto WNBA team

Rapper Drake isn’t dancing around the question of who he’d want to lead a mooted Toronto WNBA franchise, with an Aussie star leading the way.

If world famous rapper Drake gets his wish to have his own WNBA team in Toronto, he made it abundantly clear he wants Liz Cambage as the first name he signs, declaring her the “face of the franchise” in an Instagram post.

Drake, a Canadian rapper born in Toronto, is a huge fan of the Toronto Raptors in the NBA and is often spotted sitting courtside for their games and passionately cheering them on.

He was also announced as the Raptors’ global ambassador in 2013.

However, while his hometown boasts a team that won the NBA championship in 2019, it doesn’t have a WNBA team of its own.

Drake took to his Instagram story on Wednesday to state his wish, with the caption reading “@wnba I need a Toronto team.”

It remains to be seen whether Toronto will be the next expansion team to join the 12-team strong WNBA, or if Drake would be the sole owner of any potential franchise.

But one thing’s for sure – Cambage would be the first name in headlights for the team.

It also appears Cambage would be more than happy to uproot herself from her current side, the Las Vegas Aces, and move up north.

Underneath the post she commented: “LETS TAKE IT TO THE 6 PAPIIIIIIII.”

“The 6” is an oft-used nickname for the city of Toronto, a name popularised by Drake himself.

Cambage also shared Drake’s post of the two to her own Instagram story and included a fingers crossed emoji.

The Australian star has played for three WNBA teams in her career: the Aces, the Dallas Wings and the now-defunct Tulsa Shock.

A fourth team would likely be on the cards if a Toronto expansion franchise came to fruition.

Cambage also played on Australian shores in the WNBL as recently as 2020 with the Southside Flyers in Victoria.

Despite her success at club level, she was making headlines for all the wrong reasons with the Australian Opals in the lead-up to the Tokyo Olympics.

The 30-year-old was involved in a physical and verbal altercation with the Nigerian women’s team during a scrimmage in Las Vegas and reportedly breached the Opals’ bio-secure bubble.

Cambage ultimately pulled out of the Olympics, citing mental health issues, and spoke on HBO’s The Shop: Uninterruptedabout how dire her personal situation was.

“The Olympics is Everest for every athlete,” Cambage said. “It was about to be my third, it was meant to be the one.

“Like, every Olympics is the one, Australia’s gonna get a gold medal.

“And I’m like, ‘I’m broken, guys.’”
