NBA: Ben Simmons dominates as Philadelphia 76ers defeat Boston Celtics

Questions about the things he can't do on the court used to annoy Ben Simmons. Not any more. Fresh off leading his Philadelphia 76ers past Boston Celtics on open night, the Aussie star was ready for the question that was always going to come.

Aussie NBA star Ben Simmons knows the question is coming, even after an exhilarating performance that led his Philadelphia 76ers past Boston Celtics on opening night.

It’s all about the jumpshot — or lack-thereof.

The Melbourne-born jet put the Boston Celtics to the sword, slicing and dicing his way to the hoop on his way to a team-high 24 points on just 16 shots, adding 9 assists and 8 rebounds.

But the question came early in the post-game press conference.

‘Do you get frustrated by the focus on the things you can’t do?’

It used to be an annoyance, now he’s prepared for it.

“No, because, there’s a reason — I’m skilled, I’m gifted, so I think I’m pretty good at what I do,” Simmons said.

“There’s things I’ve got to get better at, everybody knows that … it’s shooting, but I’m working. It is what it is”.

There was some hope that the 23-year-old athletic freak might make his first NBA three-pointer, but it just wasn’t required.

The 23-year-old athletic freak looked a step ahead of every player on the floor against a new-look Celtics line-up to last season’s defensive dynamo — Boston’s defensive pillars, Aussie Aron Baynes (Phoenix) and Al Horford (now Simmons’ teammate) gone.

The defensively-limited Enes Kanter and Daniel Thiess were left to guard the rim and Simmons was like a kid in a candy shop, his efforts punctuated by an absurd in-motion one-handed catch and finish on the break that set social media alight.

Coach Brett Brown gushed his star charge had “put his thumbprint” on the contest.

“He is just so gifted, obviously, physically, but now it’s starting to morph in with like a mentality,” Brown said after the game.

“You take that 6’10” body and that athleticism, that physical tank-like mentality and it’s a powerful combination.

“He probably had a few turnovers that we wished didn’t happen, but by and large, I thought he had an excellent game and I especially liked his mindset, trying to put his thumbprint on the game from a physical standpoint.”

The 208cm point guard might have been the architect, but he had plenty of co-workers doing their bit.

Big man Joel Embiid had a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double, Tobias Harris had 15-15, Horford managed 16 points and fellow new acquisition Josh Richardson scored 17.

On the eve of his first step into season No.3, Simmons declared he would only be satisfied with an NBA title at season’s end.

If he keeps playing like this, that just might come true.

90-101 PHI 2.01 left – Gordon Hayward makes two free throws for the Celts.

90-104 PHI 1.28 left – Ben hits Thybulle in the corner and he makes a ridiculous three with a hand in his face.

90-105 PHI 1.05 left – Horford misses one and makes one.

The Sixers are well in control now.

Simmons shot a midrange jumper, but left it short.

He's been beasting, now up to 22 points to go with 7 assists and 7 rebounds.

Ben's leading the way, but he has had plenty of help.

Embiid has 15 and 13, Richardson is up to 15 and Harris has done all the dirty work, with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Yep, this is absurd!

PAY UP, PAT!

Los Angeles Clippers guard Patrick Beverley was fined $25,000 by the NBA on Wednesday for hurling the ball into the stands at the finish of his team’s season-opening victory Tuesday.

Beverley was standing next to a referee after the Clippers defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 112-102 at Staples Center.

But instead of handing the official the ball after the final seconds expired, Beverley hurled the ball a considerable distance into the spectator area.

The fine on Beverley marked the first fine or punishment of any sort imposed by the league following the start of the 2019-20 campaign.

The 31-year-old American had 10 rebounds and six assists for the Clippers despite a 1-for-7 shooting performance for two points against the Lakers.

Beverley played in Ukraine, Greece and Russia after college before joining the Houston Rockets in 2013 and spending four seasons with the club before being traded to the Clippers as part of a deal that brought Chris Paul to the Rockets.

Hold them off and keep holding.

The Sixers couldn't quite bust this open.

Until back-to-back threes gave them a double digit lead.

Furkan Korkmaz and then Tobias Harris go bang-bang and it should be all downhill from here.

The Celtics are going to make their name being a dogged side this season and they're trying to do that today against a side that is clearly more talented. Scrapping and fighting to stay in it.

I think Hayward was reading the blog. After I potted him, he's got going. He's up to 15 – 8 in that quarter.

But the Sixers just have all the answers. Every time the Celtics go on a run, the Sixers get a stop or just quell it with a piece of well-executed offence.

All five starters are now in double digits, led, of course, by Simmons with 18. Embiid has that double-double with 15-11.

Jaylen Brown just signed a 4-year $167 million extension and he's played 10 minutes for 4 points. #VALUE

13-4 Celtic run and they've cut the lead to just 5.

Tatum is just showing signs, he's up to 17.

The Sixers have been very wasteful with the ball. Giving it away too often and allowing the Celtics to gouge the lead.

Ben has 18-5-5 while, Tobias Harris has a double-double 10-10.

Joel Embiid has just been whistled for a Flagrant 1 – unnecessary contact around the neck. It wasn't pretty on Kanter.
