Australian Mason Peatling has broken a 48-year college basketball record in the US while playing for Eastern Washington University.

Peatling, who hails from Melbourne, scored 54 points against Multnomnah, setting the scoring record for a player in the Big Sky Conference, which forms part of the NCAA’s Division I.

The previous scoring record was 53 points, held by Willie Humes of Idaho State. That record was set way back in 1971.

The conference has produced NBA talent including Portland star Damian Lillard, former Knicks guard Michael Ray Richardson and journeyman Rodney Stuckey.

The 22-year-old Victorian, who stands at 203cm, also set a new league record by making 24 of 30 field goals and shot 100 per cent from three-point range, while he also pulled down 13 rebounds in just 23 minutes.

“Mason had a great game and it was fun to watch him play,” Eastern head coach Shantay Legans told the team’s website.

“Our guys were smart and got him touches. We have such an unselfish team – we had 39 assists tonight. We have players who put other people ahead of themselves.

“A lot of guys could have done that tonight, but it was Mason’s night. There were guys on him that weren’t big enough.”

Peatling attended Beconhills College in Berwick and is currently a senior at Eastern Washington University.
