Australian basketball star Liz Cambage leaves the LA Sparks

Australian basketball star Liz Cambage is set to end her time at WNBA side the Los Angeles Sparks and “wants out” of LA altogether.

Shocking details of Liz Cambage’s pre-Olympic outburst finally revealed

Australian basketball star Liz Cambage is set to end her time at WNBA side the Los Angeles Sparks and “wants out” of LA altogether.

After multiple sources told The Ball Out that the four-time WNBA all-star would leave the team, an official announcement was made on Tuesday.

“It is with support that we share Liz Cambage’s decision to terminate her contract with the organisation,” Sparks Managing Partner Eric Holoman said in a press release.

“We want what’s best for Liz and have agreed to part ways amicably. The Sparks remain excited about our core group and are focused on our run towards a 2022 playoff berth.”

Interim head coach Fred Williams said Cambage struggled with conditioning and facing double- and triple-team matchups, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Cambage made comments about her intentions to leave the Sparks to multiple people within the organisation, according to Girls Talk Sports TV, which reported chemistry issues amongst Los Angeles players that date back to late May.

It is not clear where she could move next.

The 30-year-old centre averaged 13.0 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 25 games with the Sparks this season.

The four-time WNBA All-Star joined Los Angeles after two years with the Las Vegas Aces.

“It was L.A. or out for me. There was nowhere else I wanted to be,” Cambage said in February,

Cambage pulled out of the Opals’ Olympic campaign last year after allegations she used a racial slur towards Nigerian players during practice.

An investigation by Basketball Australia saw Cambage issued with a formal reprimand and the Opals never recovered from her late withdrawal, as they bombed out of the Olympics in the quarter-finals.

She has vowed never to play for Australia again, after an international career that saw her claim gold at the Commonwealth Games and a bronze at the 2012 Olympics.
