Australian schools rugby championship: Players, skills Aust schools sevens coach wants, squad lists

There’s a place for all sizes and shapes in the new Australian sevens squad being selected at the schools rugby championships – and teen tyros with this special trait.

It’s not just what happens on the field that turns the head of Australian schoolgirls sevens coach Ash Mewburn, it’s off it as well.

Mewburn, also the NSW U18s 1 coach at the Australian schools rugby championships on the Sunshine Coast believes good culture is as important as any skill in girls sevens.

It’s why she’s on the lookout for players with speed and assorted “super powers” but also those who will buy in and contribute to the special culture of an Australian team.

“I want to see some speed on my edge, big powerful forwards to get us going and those willing to build a culture and trust early,” Mewburn said.

“They say boys need to play good to feel good but I’m a firm believer girls need to feel good to play good.

“I want them to bring out their super powers in each other and if you are comfortable with someone off the field, you will go to war for them on it.”

Mewburn is particularly fond of players with an X factor and those willing to put in “hard yakka”.

“Someone who is a hot stepper and who can be unpredictable, bend the line and be selfless,’’ she said.

“I love the hard yakkers as well. They are just as important to get the girls going forward.

“I like to find amazing athletic players, tall, strong and to drive the contact and get in the air. Ones who are always contesting.”

Mewburn said there is also a place for all shapes and sizes in her sevens squads.

“Amazon‘s, pocket rockets, speedsters, big bashers … there’s a place for every shape and size, there are no stereotypes here.’’ she said.

With her NSW cap on, Mewburn believes her team needs to be fast on their feet to combat the traditional physical style of their Queensland opposites.

“They are always going to be physical – they like the big bash game – so we will try and get it out to our speedsters on the edge,’’ she said.

At the end of the tournament, a squad will be named to go into camp and comprised of 12 players from the 18s competition and the best eight from the 16sh at a certain age at the end of the tournament.

From this camp a team will be named to play at the Global Youth Championships in New Zealand in December.
