If the first day was slow going, day 2 at Melbourne Park offered plenty for the fans, as the Australian Open truly marked the start of its 2025 edition.
FRANCES TIAFOE LEAVES IT ALL OUT THERE
Well, we can’t accuse America’s Frances Tiafoe of holding anything back, literally leaving it all out there during his war with against France’s Arthur Rinderknech.
Tiafoe survived the five-round classic, winning 7-6 (2) 6-3 4-6 6-7 (4) 6-3, but may need a bit longer to recover after that one.

– Callum Dick
Eleventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas crashed out in the first round of the Australian Open just two years after reaching the final at Melbourne Park.
The Greek superstar was stunned by rising American sensation Alex Michelsen 7-5 6-3 2-6 6-4 on Monday in the first major upset of the men’s draw.
Before the tournament Tsitsipas hailed Melbourne’s Greek community as a major ally in his Australian Open conquest but try as they might, his parochial fans could not drag him over the line in the face of young Michelsen’s magical onslaught.
AUSSIE KEEPS HER COOL AS RIVAL MELTS DOWN
– Ed Bourke
Aussie wildcard Talia Gibson kept her cool to win her first ever grand slam match as her higher-ranked opponent combusted in the sun at Melbourne Park.
Gibson, 20, advanced to the second round in her second Australian Open main draw appearance as she held her nerve in a second-set tiebreak to win 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 on Monday.
A nervous start threatened to cost the world No. 150 against her 94th-ranked opponent Zeynep Sonmez, but she held her serve to save the match at 5-4 down in the second set before clinching the tiebreak and breaking her Turkish rival in the second hour of the clash.
SINNER CRUISES IN TITLE DEFENCE OPENER
Jannik Sinner’s start to his title defence couldn’t have gone any smoother, securing his 14th consecutive straight-sets win after dispatching of Nicholas Jarry on Rod Laver Arena.
Sinner comes into the tournament under some pressure after two failed drug tests, yet showed no signs of it in his first match in Melbourne.
