Two years ago he was denied by the tsunami that was the Special Ks but last night it was Matthew Ebden’s turn to get hold of the Australian Open men’s doubles trophy.
Ebden teamed with Indian Rohan Bopanna to have Rod Laver Arena rocking after they defeated unseeded Italian pair Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 7-6 7-5.
While it was Ebden’s third grand slam title – he won the mixed doubles in Melbourne in 2013 and a Wimbledon doubles title in 2022 – his partner was putting his name in the record books.
At the age of 43 Bopanna became the oldest grand slam doubles winner.
Back in 2022 when the Special Ks – Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis – took Melbourne Park by storm with their electrifying run to the doubles title it was Ebden, and fellow Aussie Max Purcell, who were at the other end of the court in the final.
Ebden, 36, and Bopanna have been together for just over 12 months and will officially be crowned world No.1 after their Australian Open success.
