Tom Brady sets another NFL record as rookie trading card sells for $4 million

The GOAT just passed yet another NFL record – and the new NFL season is still three months away.

A Tom Brady rookie trading card sold for $US3.1 million ($AUD4 million) at the Lelands Mid-Spring Classic Auction on the weekend, a record amount for a football card sold in a public action. Lelands did not reveal the name of the buyer.

Brady, whose nickname stands for “Greatest Of All Time”, is a seven-time Super Bowl champion — including last season’s title with Tampa Bay — the holder of almost every individual passing record in league history, and the bane of every New York Jets fans’ existence.

“It’s no surprise that Tom Brady continues to break records at almost 44 years old,” Casey Sherman, co-author of the 2018 book 12: The Inside Story of Tom Brady’s Fight for Redemption told the New York Post.

“Some day soon the Brady rookie card will be the most valuable card on the market, worth more even than (baseball legend) Mickey Mantle’s.”

The Yankees slugger’s 1952 Topps trading card is currently valued at $AUD6.7 million, tied for the most expensive sports card of all time with a LeBron James rookie card, according to sports business analyst Darren Rovell.

The weekend’s sale eclipses the previous football record of $AUD2.9 million netted by another Brady rookie card sold just two months ago.
