Oakland Athletics catcher Stephen Vogt got hit in the groin, and days later is still feeling the effects

IT’S not surprising this guy was in excruciating pain after getting hit in man’s most sensitive area. What is surprising is how he’s feeling days later.

‘The pain is indescribable’

THREE days after suffering a man’s worst nightmare, Stephen Vogt’s crown jewels are still not ready for active duty.

The Oakland Athletics catcher copped a sickening blow on Sunday when a foul tip crashed into his groin. The impact sent Vogt sprawling to the turf where he writhed in pain for all to see. He eventually had to be helped off the field, the grimace on his face giving a hint as to how distressed he was.

He was back in the clubhouse before the Athletics’ game against the Houston Astros on Wednesday, but despite the time that’s passed since the incident, he was still feeling the after-effects.

“I’ve taken so many shots to the cup,” Vogt said. “This one was 150km/h if not harder with the redirection. I’ve never been hit that directly with that much velocity. The pain in indescribable. I’m on pain medication and I’m still not comfortable. This has been miserable the past couple of days,” Vogt told the San Francisco Chronicle.

“I’m lucky no surgery was required, nothing removable kind-of-surgery.”

The 30-year-old is no stranger to body blows, having studied reasons for why he seems to get hit more often than most catchers, identifying his set-up as a potential factor. But Ketel Marte’s deflection off a Drew Pomeranz fast ball was the worst hit he’s ever received.

“That’s what got me…just kind of a freak, fluke thing,” Vogt said.

While the catcher may not have been smiling, those in the Twittersphere certainly managed to make light of the situation.

Vogt was seen icing the affected area before his side did battle with the Astros, but it is unknown when he will return to the Athletics’ line-up.
