MEET Ben Ancheff, the 136kg pitcher proving you don’t need to be an athlete to be an American sporting hero.
Following in a long line of oversized baseball legends that includes none other than the great Babe Ruth, Ancheff took social media by storm during his start for St. Thomas college this weekend.
“Ben Ancheff isn’t your ‘normal’ athlete. Listed at 6’2” and 300 pounds on the St. Thomas Bobcats’ official website, Ancheff amazes fans with his size — and his skills,” wrote Bleacher Report’s Arman Walia.
“As his team took on Lewis-Clark State on Friday night, Ancheff limited his opponent to one run in four innings, striking out five before being removed due to arm soreness.”

“What’s the old John Kruk quote? ‘He’s not an athlete, he’s a baseball player?’ Ben Ancheff: baseball hero,” offered CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa.

Deadspin’s Timothy Burke also through out the term “heroic”.
“St. Thomas (Miami) pitcher Ben Ancheff got the whole internet talking [Friday] night after starting in the Bobcats’ NAIA World Series game in Idaho last night against Lewis-Clark State.
“But it wasn’t his 5.40 ERA or his unimpressive 3-2 record that blew everybody’s heads off; it was his girth. So much girth.
“Is this man anything but heroic?”
