A-League: Macarthur FC’s Michael Ruhs grounded by chores for Bulls teammates

He might be a rising star of the game but there’s something interesting keeping this Macarthur FC young gun well grounded at his club.

He made a big impression on the pitch in his first season with Macarthur FC but that doesn’t mean Michael Ruhs has escaped doing his chores.

Heading into the 2021/22 A-League season, Ruhs said he still has a long job list at the club in his role thanks to his youth and he has no issue doing the grind.

“I came in from an NPL team so to be surrounded by people like this was incredible,” Ruhs said.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything more. They all looked out for me as well, they alway made sure I was happy and confident.

“At the start you do things like clean the coffee machine, pack up the gear, the balls, that sort of thing as the youngest.

“I still have to sweep the floor, sort the coffee machine and clean.”

The 19-year-old local born at Cecil Park and now living at Horsley Park has signed a one-year extension with the Bulls after taking the pitch in 15 matches last season.

A highlight for the former Thomas Hassall Anglican College student was scoring a goal on debut at Campbelltown Stadium in the 1-1 draw with Melbourne City.

Another for the former Liverpool Olympic and Sydney United player, was sealing the extra-time victory against the Central Coast Mariners which put them into the semi-finals.

“Me being the youngest, I knew it would be tough to get into the team, I knew it would be a bit of a grind. I just wanted one game to prove myself,“ he said.

“Then it was like a domino effect and my confidence started rising and I got my first goal.

“I just love this game. I see there’s a real privilege to play.’’

The Bulls are hoping to improve on their first-up semi-final result but Federici has already warned the second season will be tougher than the first.

“The second season is probably always going to be that little bit harder because expectations change, people suss you out pretty quickly,’’ Federici said after being named to lead Macarthur.

Macarthur FC’s first match is against Wellington Phoenix at Campbelltown before they playing five straight games against NSW rivals in a jam-packed start to the 2021/2022 A-League season.

The Bulls open their campaign on November 21.
