VICE-captain Ollie Wines has made no apology for the tough punishment dished out to Darcy Byrne-Jones for sleeping through an alarm, saying Port Adelaide’s players are setting high standards in their quest for a top-four berth.
Running defender Byrne-Jones was dropped for Port’s clash against Carlton at the MCG on Saturday after missing a team meeting at Alberton on Monday.
The in-form Wines revealed the decision was made by the Power’s leadership group which had now set a precedent.
“Unfortunately for Darc he missed something,” Wines explained.
“We’re trying to set some high standards at the club.
“Kenny tries to give us a fair bit of responsibilities nowadays. We’re appointed by the playing group so we’ve got to decide on these issues.
“We want to set good standards, we want to have these standards off field that go on field and lead to playing into big finals.
“We don’t want to be a push over and we’re making a stance on that now.
He understands he was late for something and has paid the price.”
Byrne-Jones’ demotion paves the way for former Melbourne skipper Jack Trengove to play his first AFL game in Port Adelaide colours.
Jack Hombsch comes into the side for in-form defender Tom Jonas who has restrained a hamstring.
