Trade Daily: Players left in limbo as free agency window closes

THE free agency period has officially closed with a number of players still without a new club, including Geelong's Daniel Menzel and Western Bulldogs premiership player Jordan Roughead. See the free agentsĀ  still unsigned and what happens next.

CAREERS remain in limbo but there are still options for the game’s free agents.

The free agency period ended when the clock hit 5pm on Friday with the likes of Cat Daniel Menzel, Hawks duo Taylor Duryea and Ryan Schoenmakers and Bulldogs ruck Jordan Roughead without a free agent offer.

But there is still time for the game’s free agents to find new homes should they wish.

They can choose to take whatever deal is on offer at their current club - if there is one, can attempt to spend coming weeks negotiating one, or can try and find a new club and get a trade facilitated by Wednesday.

If that fails, they can be officially delisted by the club or delist themselves and be picked up during the delisted free agency period which starts on November 1.

All of that failing, they can walk, delist themselves and nominate for the draft.

Menzel, an unrestricted free agent, played 13 games this season and kicked 27 goals. He does not have a deal on the table at Geelong and while there had been interest from the Saints, they have opted against pursuing the forward who had hoped to jag a two-year deal.

His manager Adam Ramanauskas was confident as recently as last week that Menzel would be playing AFL next year — it was just a matter of where.

Two-time premier Duryea has undergone a medical at Sydney and has also reportedly attracted interest from the Western Bulldogs, while Dogs ruck Jordan Roughead told the club last month of his intention to explore his options.

Geelong signed ruck pairing Rhys Stanley and Ryan Abbott for another two seasons on Friday, with rookie pair Jamaine Jones and Sam Simpson also signing new deals worth one and two years respectively.
