The Score: How Geelong forward Tom Hawkins stopped country music star Kasey Chambers’ concert

Who knew Tom Hawkins was a massive country music fan? The Geelong star was blown away when he received a message from Kasey Chambers after Sunday’s country game. But it was an incident at a concert which revealed his passion.

The Country Game against Essendon is always a big week for Tom Hawkins given he’s the face of the promotion for the match.

Being a traditional country boy from Finley in NSW and now owning a farm in Ceres, just out of Geelong, the Cats spearhead is a farmer in every sense of the word.

But the presence of leading country singer Kasey Chambers in the pre-game line-up on Sunday was particularly exciting for Hawkins.

It turns out he is Chambers’ No. 1 fan and the Cats digital team managed to get the singer to send him a personal message which he viewed post-match.

But it was what the ARIA Hall of Famer told them about Hawkins off-camera which shows the depth of his love for the country music star.

During a gig in Geelong, Chambers did something she’d never done before and stopped the band in the middle of her hit song ‘Not Pretty Enough’ because she was so taken by Hawkins’ singing in the front row.

Apparently the Cats superstar was in a world of his own and we’re told he’s never missed a gig when Chambers is in town.

We’re certainly not perfect down here but the NRL has the AFL covered for its ability to engineer stuff-ups.

The latest centres around the promotion of the NRL’s Magic Round this weekend which sees all 16 clubs descending on Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium to play eight games across four days.

Yesterday there was the standard PR event featuring a player from every club … except one.

That’s right the home team, the Brisbane Broncos, were a no-show for the Youi Million-Dollar Kick promotion which had NRL boss Todd Greenberg seeing red.

It’s understood the Broncos refused to send a nominated representative because the club’s chief sponsor is NRMA, a competitor to insurance rival Youi, which was sponsoring the fans competition.

One fan from each club gets the shot at the “Magic Target” themselves or can get their club ambassador (either a current player or club legend) to take the kick on their behalf to win a million bucks.

While there was plenty of Winx memorabilia flying around everywhere in the lead-up to her final race, you’ll have to wait a few years before it’s worth a decent quid.

That’s certainly not the case when it comes to anything associated with Phar Lap and next week there is a rare opportunity to get your hands on something linked to the great horse.

A leading private collector is selling his collection of Phar Lap memorabilia through Abacus Auctions with an estimated value of $140,000.

Items up for sale include Phar Lap’s horse shoes (estimated $30,000), a bridle ($6000) and the 1930 and 1931 Cox Plate racebooks, both won by Phar Lap, which are extremely rare and valued at $10,000 each.

THE WHISPER

Talk about being in the right place at the right time. Leading player agent Tom Petroro, a mad Liverpool fan, was at Anfield yesterday. The TLA high flyer made the smart decision to ensure his European holiday included seeing both legs of the Champions League semi-final.
