The Score: Big oversight in the Western Bulldogs’ 2019 membership campaign

The Western Bulldogs this week launched its 2019 campaign with an impressive video narrated by Bob Murphy that featured landmarks around Footscray. But one thing was missing.

There are many things that go into a membership campaign.

Catchy slogans are thrown around for months in the lead-up. Some hit the mark and others miss badly.

Who can forget a couple of Carlton’s slogans such as ‘‘They know we’re coming’’, which was followed by ‘‘Can you smell what the Blues are cooking’’.

PLAYER WAGES: MORE WEALTH BUT ELITE EARNING LESS

SELFLESS: HEPPELL FORGING STRONGER BONDS AT BOMBERS

The Western Bulldogs this week launched its 2019 campaign under the banner Belong to the West.

An impressive video, narrated by former captain Bob Murphy, sells the message with footage of players and landmarks around Footscray.

It ticks a lot of boxes except one … there is not a woman in sight. Even when there are shots of local business owners — the legendary Franco Cozzo gets a mention — and young Bulldog fans, they are all male.

Given it is International Women’s Day on Friday, we’re thinking there may be a late editing session.

BUNDY ONE OF THE BIGGEST

King Kong Bundy, one of the most prominent wrestling stars of the 1980s and 1990s, has died at the age of 61.

The legend, whose real name was Christopher Alan Pallies, featured in one of the most iconic matches in WWE history when he took on Hulk Hogan in a steel cage match at WrestleMania II in 1986.

Known as the “walking condominium”, Bundy was 193cm tall and weighed 208kg.

Pallies started his career in 1981 but went into semi-retirement in 1988, before returning to the WWF in 1994 as part of The Million Dollar Corporation, and faced the Undertaker at WrestleMania XI in 1995.

He retired in 1995 and began a second career which included stand-up comedy and film appearances.

Hogan said on social media: “Overwhelmed by King Kong Bundy’s passing, only great memories, R.I.P. big man until we meet again. HH”

KOBE AND THE GREAT UNWASHED

Collingwood star Jeremy Howe was one of the first people to line up at Crown casino on Tuesday night for a meet and greet with basketball superstar Kobe Bryant.

The Pies defender was more than happy to bide his time with the punters before getting his 30 seconds with the Lakers legend.

He tweeted shortly after: “How long is it acceptable to not wash ya hand after shaking @kobebryant hand....? 🤔

His teammate Brayden Maynard was also in the crowd while a Richmond contingent including Tom Lynch, Jack Riewoldt, Alex Rance and Shane Edwards arrived later for an audience with the NBA hall-of-famer.

Bryant flew into Melbourne for less than 48 hours. Some die-hard fans shelled out $8000 for a VIP ticket to last night’s The Mamba Mentality Experience at Crown Palladium.

THE WHISPER

Which Ashes hopeful chucked a tantrum at his state coach when told to chase quick runs? It’s fair to say his response about needing runs to keep selectors happy didn’t go down well.
