The bump is not dead - it is alive and more confusing than ever before

THE available evidence which separates James Kelly and Darren Jolly is one of their victims, Brendon Goddard, wiped his mouth.

The other victim, Matty Stokes, did no such thing.

He got up and simply shook his head.

Goddard got up and wiped his mouth and checked for blood - and also shook his head.

Both Goddard and Stokes, who was on the receiving end of Jolly's hip and shoulder on Saturday night, played the game out and did not report any injuries to club medical staff after the game.

So, both weren't hurt, both received minor contact to the head, but Kelly is suspended and Jolly is free to play.

Wish I had a dollar for every time I've heard in the past week that if you choose bump and hit someone in the head, you will be trouble.

Right now, the bump is more confusing than ever.

How can Kelly's be forceful and Jolly's not?

Oh, that's right, Goddard wiped his face _ he must have been hurt.

Was it because Kelly's was seen to be a shirt-front to unsuspecting player and Jolly simply stood his ground and allowed the bump to happen?

Or that Jolly is a monster and Stokes is a jockey?

No explanation along those lines from the MRP, so the determination has to be about the force of contact.

The bump rule is legitimate because it protects the player.

The interpretation of the rule by the MRP is chook lotto.

Lindsay Thomas' hit on Ben Reid was an accident, even though Reid was KO'd, and Thomas is not guilty.

Eddie Betts on Nathan Wright was an accident, Wright broke is jaw, and Betts gets five cut down to three.

Kelly bumps Goddard and gets a week, and two weeks for a bad record.

Jolly bumps Stokes and Jolly is not guilty.

Further confusing was the decision yesterday not to suspend Port Adelaide's Hamish Hartlett for three hits on Blues skipper Marc Murphy .

The MRP said the force did not constitute a report.

The first punch was a cream puff, the second forced Murphy to double over and start to collapse to the ground and the third one was a forearm to Murphy's face.

The MRP can't sit on the fence on this one.

Either Hartlett sent Murphy to the turf or Murphy took a dive.

It has to be one or the other.
