SuperFooty Podcast: What has caused Brisbane Lions’ No. 1 draft pick Cameron Rayner to get the second-year Blues?

Has Brisbane Lions No.1 draft pick Cameron Rayner got a case of the second-year Blues? The young gun’s recent form was a hot topic on this week’s SuperFooty podcast.

He was the No. 1 draft pick two years ago and roared onto the scene in his first year with Brisbane Lions.

But Cameron Rayner has experienced the second-season blues this year, failing to reach 10 disposals in four of his eight games and booting 11 goals.

Chief football writer Mark Robinson discussed Rayner’s indifferent form on this week’s SuperFooty podcast.

“We saw so much of his talent last year and he played forward 50 last year,” Robinson said. “You think, well he will get fitter, he will get stronger … he’ll get more game fitness so he will last longer in games. He’ll start playing a bit of midfield.

“That hasn’t happened and at Round 8, it’s quite incredible.”

Robinson said he was keen to get to the bottom of Rayner’s slump, although Brian Taylor said the 19-year-old deserved leniency as a young player.

“Next time I talk to Chris Fagan the coach of Brisbane, I am going to ask him about his thinking around Cam Rayner, because he keeps playing him,” Robinson said.

“We know what he thinks of him. But Cam Rayner is having a really down year compared to last year and I don’t know what’s wrong.”
