Suspended Western Bulldogs star Lachie Hunter is going alcohol-free in a bid to raise money for road trauma victims.

On Tuesday Hunter was formally charged by Victoria Police following an incident in April during which he crashed in to four cars.

He was charged with drink driving, careless driving and failing to give his name after the incident and Hunter remains ineligible for selection after copping a four-week ban by the Western Bulldogs.

But in response to the incident Hunter and five teammates have signed up for Dry July with all funds raised set to go to the Alfred Hospital’s road accident trauma program.

“Dry July is a great chance to raise some awareness and some money for a really good cause,” Hunter posted on Instagram.

“Given recent circumstances me and a few mates have decided to put our own spin on it.

“All funds donated will go towards the Alfred hospital - road accident trauma program.”

Aaron Naughton, Tom Liberatore, Caleb Daniel, Callum Porter and Billy Gowers will join Hunter on his crusade during the month of July.

Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli this week praised Hunter for his attitude since the incident.

“He’s made a really good, concerted effort. You can tell how hard he’s working to try and earn the trust that he’s lost back,” Bontempelli told RSN’s The Breakfast Club on Tuesday.

“That’s obviously a really encouraging sign for Lachie, us as leaders and the football club, to see that he wants to repay the faith.

“He’s continuing to work, not just from a football perspective, but with his off-field leadership as well, to try and help and support every player on the list and especially the leadership group.”

Hunter is due to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on November 4.
