Nick Davis’ match-winning goal for Sydney against Geelong in 2005 semi-final in Remember When
IT BROKE Geelong’s hearts and set the Swans up to make history. We remember the most famous moment in the history of Sydney-Geelong clashes.

Don't miss out on the headlines from Sydney. Followed categories will be added to My News.
FOR Geelong supporters, it was the ultimate heartbreak.
For Sydney supporters, it was pure sweetness.
Nick Davis’ last-gasp, match-winning goal in the 2005 semi-final is not only one of the most famous moments in games between Sydney and Geelong — the two teams clash this Saturday night at the SCG — it’s also one of the most memorable instances in AFL history.
In a scrappy, low-scoring affair, the Cats seemed destined to reach their second straight preliminary final after taking a 17-point led into the final change.
And after David Johnson kicked the first goal of the final term, the Cats found themselves up by 23 points. Sydney had only kicked three goals for the entire night, yet needed to kick four in the final term to win the game.
Enter Davis, who, literally, won the game off his own boot and produced one of the great individual performances ever seen on a footy field.
He booted the next three goals of the game — two were snaps, the other a successful set-shot conversion — to reduce the margin to three points.
With approximately 10 seconds left on the clock, there was a stoppage around 20m out from the Swans’ goal. Davis pounced on the footy and juggled it as he sprinted towards goal. With little control, Davis instinctively threw the ball onto his left boot.
The ball sailed over the goal umpire’s head with three seconds left on the clock.
And the Swans were into a preliminary final.
Davis finished with 4.2 from 24 disposals.
Just as famous as Davis’ goal was the call by TV commentator Anthony Hudson, who sensationally captured the thoughts and emotions of all footy fans in the moment.
“I see it, but I don’t believe it!” Hudson said.
And that famous line has since become a catchcry among kids practising match-winning goals in the backyard.
While it was pure ecstasy for the Swans, Cats players were left heartbroken, with the likes of Cameron Mooney and Cameron Ling struggling to hide their emotions post-match.
On Tuesday, we asked Fox Footy fans for their memories of ‘that’ Davis goal.
